Col.
Cheers lads. She's been put to one side lately as I want to get the Hawk finished and do a bit more research before getting to the painting stage. What I have been doing on and off is the propeller disc and scratch-built parts for a raised undercarriage. Unfortunately in my haste to get the main airframe together I forgot to glue in the strong magnet I'd planned to use as part of a display stand so need to re-think that aspect of the project

Diamondbacks VF-102
How did the rear canopy section fit on to the fuselage? Mine broke in 2 whilst trying to make it fit. grrmbblll. As a matter of fact it was sitting to high & i'd have to trim the top section of the bulkhead were the seat rest on. I got it repeared but its obvious it will by noticeable when looking at the model. I b'n looking around for a solution to hide it... next time i build another Tamiya 48e spit i place the canopy rearsection first. before adding the interior. lesson learned i guess. Otherwise it's a great little kit. Fit is very good not to mention perfect. Except that damn rear canopy section. Keep up. Col.
Cheers for the interest and encouragement lads. Sorry I've not updated this for a while but been researching a bit more and experimenting, albeit unsuccessfully, with methods and materials to make a convincing clear prop effect. Will post some pictures once it gets interesting again How did the rear canopy section fit on to the fuselage?Mine broke in 2 whilst trying to make it fit...next time i build another Tamiya 48e spit i place the canopy rear section first. before adding the interior. lesson learned i guess. Otherwise it's a great little kit. Fit is very good not to mention perfect. Except that damn rear canopy section. Sorry to hear about your broken canopy but sounds as if you have the perfect solution to avoid it for everyone reading this who have yet to do theirs. Had a bit of an issue with it myself and although I managed to trim enough material of both the canopy and headrest/bulkhead it still sits a little too proud of the fuselage for my liking. Perhaps a smear of filler on the adjacent spine and some sanding/polishing will cure that.
Col.
Finally finding the time to move this one forward again. All the scratchbuilt components I have to show the undercarriage in retracted position are made and paint is drying so also fabricated the two vent fairings for the gun heating system missed by Tamiya on the underwing. Need to get the camera & computer to talk with one another before I can show any photos but in the meantime I did find a period photo I'd been looking for in a newspaper article about a 602 Sqn. veteran. Daily Record article and photo Although it's not high resolution the lower engine cowl looks to be very light in colour (perhaps even silver?) and the wings seem to be different, one light and the other dark. This could be a result of the left wing being in shadow but have a look and see what you think. It's past midnight here and I'd rather be in bed by now so the brain isn't at its most efficient at photo interpretation

Col.
Thanks Chris. The kit is certainly a good one. A fine example of a straightforward easy to assemble kit with a good level of detail. Only issues I've had so far were mostly my own making. Got home to find the tin of Humbrol matt black I used to paint the wheelwell and tyres last night must have gone off. Still tacky and with a gloss finish. Some paint striping required this evening At least I didn't use it to spray the whole wing yet.

Col.
Thanks John, I'll get there in the end Almost finished painting and weathering the wheels. Read that both Drem and Abbotsinch were muddy holes so adding a bit of light brown dry-brushing to the lumpy finish left by repainting with Revell matt black: bit of a happy accident that's worked in my favour Once the undercarriage components are on it's almost painting time! Feel I need to sort out a camera and get photos up for greater entertainment value now
Col.
Photos! At last. Had some issues getting them uploaded but got there in the end. Muddy wheels... glued in with the false u/c legs on... then new doors added... for a nice flush fit.
kstater94
Looking good Col! makes me want to drag my Tamiya kit out of the stash.... I don't have the patience these days to do what you're doing, I'm just happy to get em done! Cheers! John

tank152
Crikey I thought I was slow at moving things forward! I was following this build when I posted my first build on here last year, nice to see it up and running again.

I don't have the patience these days to do what you're doing, I'm just happy to get em done! Cheers! John Ah go on John, give it a go, the kit almost falls together and I've plenty spare options from the decal sheet if you want. Good idea replacing that part, something I had not thought of previously! If truth be told it seemed easier to make new parts that modify the kit bits. The added bonus is plenty spares for a future Seafire. Crikey I thought I was slow at moving things forward! I was following this build when I posted my first build on here last year, nice to see it up and running again. If you think this is bad there's a couple projects under the bench that are a lot older! Thankfully it's not a race Nice to see you back at the bench Col! Harry Lime
Alreet mannie! I'll be giving my rather long in the making Harrier GR5 a squirt of Matt Cote tonight and give it a little weathering tommorrow, then I'll take a look at getting my RNZAF P-51D finished off. Next couple of projects will be a Sea King HAR3 from the Revell kit, a Hunter GA11 and a couple of Peterhead based Mustang IVs from the new Airfix kit. Mark. Col.
Back to this one after finishing the A6M2b. More research has turned up a likely candidate my grandad would have spannered and this gave me a burst of enthusiasim late last night. The result was the final part to finish the cockpit and get the canopy closed, The 'ears' of the canopy release mechanism.
Col.
Got a little free to myself this evening after Iona went to bed so fitted the canopy. Needed a tiny amount of plastic sanded off around the lower leading edge but that was likely do to my ham-fisted attempt at fitting the windscreen. Have to go through the paint stash and look for a suitable brown and green soon I suppose...
dadgaddad
Watching the build with interest as I'm making one of these myself. Didn't have the confidence to cut the rudder actuator to bits but maybe the next time. Looking forward to seeing the final result.
Col.
Was looking at your work as well dadgaddad and you are making impressive progress. Spent the last few days doing a little more research so that came to fruition this evening when I gave the wing panels the same treatment I'd used on the fuselage. Scraped a little plastic away from behind and inside each engraved panel line in the hope it better represents the overlapping construction. Don't have enough light to take a photo and am ready for bed so hopefully post something tomorrow.

Nah nae done yet but jist aboot ready to yoke the piant. Spent oor lang looking at fit piant to lick on and far. Here's a couple photos of the wing detailling I was going on about in the last update. Col.
Slllloooowwwww work in progress at this one but at least it's progress I guess. Made the modifications for a display stand using an old bicycle spoke and nipple. The brass nipple was cut down and epoxy glued into a hole drilled where the light was moulded and this then allows the spoke to thread in. Makes a good place to hold her while painting as well... On the subject of painting we have minor disaster No.1, after a little light swearing and a rub down it got better, then some Alclad Aluminium was put in the airbrush and waved in the general direction of a Tamiya Spitfire. Now just prior to that moment I was think how, during a previous life working in the automotive industry, I'd seen paints of different types react with each other and result in a strange wrinkling effect - yet Alclad cellulose paint was recommended to be layered over an enamel base coat. Well, guess what happened next, minor disaster No.2 The whole lot had to be striped off and a second attempt was made. To much the same effect. A little more light swearing and the third attempt produced acceptable results, Not perfect but lets call it weathering. Did the wing roots as well since the photos I'm working from show even a relatively new machine with plenty boot scuffs wearing the paint away in that area, As you can see I've also masked off a white area on the fuselage for the roundel. Think I will have a go at painting the markings on this one due to a lack of some suitable decals to cover the unusual roundel dimensions as well as the main codes for the machine I want to represent. Dare say more light swearing will occur... Edited September 26, 2012 by Col.
NickR
Good stuff Col - I think it is one of the more frustrating parts of this hobby when paint doesn't do what you want it to!
