phat trev Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 (edited) A few pics to show the progress of my Typhoon. Unfortunatly, because it builds so quickly (it's the academy 1/72 Typhoon Mk.IB) I have no progress shots of the model up until the main parts had been glued together. The Cockpit is the one given with the model and I think it looks good enough, when the painting is complete I am going to scratch build the gunsight support and gunsight. Hmm, I have some Airfix Tempest tailplanes to use (airbrush testing fodder) ...but will stick to the smaller ones as I cannot be bothered to chop around at the tail to get a good fit. Well it's primed with a humbrol white spray can as I can decide to give it D-Day stripes or not tomorrow. Never done this before so a first for me (and its with an airbrush) Edited June 23, 2011 by phat trev
phat trev Posted June 15, 2011 Author Posted June 15, 2011 What...no P-47s from the 78th or 56th? Next on the list
Col. Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 Oops it was going so well too. Mask the black, spray some white, call it pre-shading Was looking at the same kit in my LMS today and was tempted after seeing your build but the new Airfix Seafire XVII won instead. Maybe next payday.
perdu Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 I wouldn't call the stripes a fail Truly, you should see some of the real striping underwing that I found when researching my Tiffie That model is looking very good, far better raw material than the elderly Frog kit I resurrected too. Keep on so I can enjoy it, nice to see another Tiffie in progress And the black and white stripes, not exclusively D-Day markings. They were applied to the Typhoon much earlier in the war so that the Tiffs weren't mistaken for FW190s by ground based Ack-ack and also for airborne recognition, so pretty well a vital part of the Tiffie's colour scheme from soon after entering service. A little touching in with a fine brush and that's your Uncle Bob I like the structural detail in the wheel wells of the moulding. It took me ages to replicate that As you can guess, you just won a happy lurker bill

Maybe next payday. The Academy is a really is a good model, a bit of TLC and I hope it will look the dogs inbetweens. I have managed to wipe the offending black stripes (if you can call them that) off using meths (works really well as long as the surface below is cured well -it was-) Another quick coat of white and this time I have masked off the white areas only followed by a coat of Xtracrylix Medium Sea Grey which is quite dark so I added a little white. Thanks for the chin up Purdu. In view of the stripes I was thinking of doing the early 'friendly fire' id markings but found all the photos of typhoons that wore them were car door versions. HOUSTON Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Soory about the stripes..keep goign though... it is still recoverable ?
perdu Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 I realise about the early type having the recognition marks ( I have a spare home moulded car door canopy if you want it, could even do you one with the "mirror dome" upper bulge too if you like ) but this shows how the markings got worked over in service, looks like the Typhoon in this picture has parts of the skinning from several aircraft
phat trev Posted June 23, 2011 Author Posted June 23, 2011 A few more progress photos: Mask, mask, mask everything!! Much happier with this finish..
perdu Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Now that's the way to do it looks lovely very lovely b
Vulcanicity Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 That looks mighty fine (second time lucky, eh!). What paint brands did you use?
