Mojosdad Posted May 27, 2011 Share Posted May 27, 2011 (edited) Kit just arrived and it's yer basic Revell 1/48 F4-C/D Going to build it as is (although not sure which option) as I enjoy the build more than the accuracy so I beg forgiveness in advance. Have never worked in this scale before so lets see how it goes. EDIT: Apols to Bexy, for not posting sprue shots earlier (hope these are OK but I can't get the camera to focus on anything closer) - I wasn't in the same location as the kit, and was getting over exited! bexwh773 Posted May 27, 2011 Share Posted May 27, 2011 Nice kit, Ive built that one...... if youre into resin, then becareful as fitting a resin cockpit is a real pig..... When I can get my hands on another, I will forget about the office, but shes in real need of resin jet pipes as the kit ones are total pants I did the Hawaian ANG option, but the decals are really nice. It's a lovely kit, the old Monogram one so it's as close to spot-on as you'll get in terms of accuracy! I have FAR too many Phantoms to work on... I can't decide which to submit for this... Mojosdad Posted May 31, 2011 Author Share Posted May 31, 2011 (edited) OK, cockpit put together, not too much special done here aside from making the fit a little better and filling sone areas where a thin moulding had left holes in the bang seats. Panels given a coat of grey black, dry brushed for a little contrast and a little detail picked out in red and yellow (hey I sound like I know what I'm doing even though I haven't used these techniques before!). You can't see the dials very well but I added a little Reflective Green to Kleer and put a drop on the large dials to look like radar scopes Only extra item I added was the pilots air hoses I made from two small bits of guitar wire -I did paint them both at the same time in what I though was the same colour but they look different; obviously one of the pilots changed his at some time..... However I have got the tub in the fuselage (don't seem to be any positive locating features that get it in the right place). I've also stuck both sides together. The big thing for me this week was that I used a bottle of plastic pipe cleaning fluid (as the jar of liquid poly was overturned all over the cutting mat - where have the markings gone!!). Merchant looked very suspicios when I asked if contained Butanone or MEK!! Once you get used to the stink I have to say I am impressed with how well it worked - less marking than Liquid Poly on areas where excess glue goes and very strong joins with almost no seam lines; the plastic doesnt melt too deep so there is little ooze, just enough.. I still cant get rid of all the filler marks on one side where I had a 2mm gap at the rear of the intake but hey ho sanding in the sun with beer is good. The sharp eyed mignt notice The arrestor hook is missing: I didn't like the gapthe moulding left between body and hook (more a deep panel line) so I cut the structure off and opened the hook up a bit. Hopefully when I stick it back any gaps left will look more natural. I've painted some crude panel lines on to give the impression to the rest of the family that a) progress is being made I know what I am doing Next on the agenda are the tail fins. I've removed some historically inaccurate features (I can'tinmagine these birds were originally made by McDonnell with 'Revell 1979 Made in China' stamped on them. Mojosdad Posted November 27, 2011 Author Share Posted November 27, 2011 I've realised I've made a dreadful mistake about the end date -its two days sooner hat I thought it was! This week has thus seen feverish activity (amazing what you can do in 5 days when you did nothing for months!) Anyhoo, weapons loadout is done, droptanks done, canopy done, decals done (excuse the upside down shot I'm letting the Klear dry). I had had to miss some of the decals on the tailplane since they disintegrated before my eyes, but I hope this still counts. All thats left to do is put it all together. I like the way you took the molded-in arresting hook off and made it look more natural. That's a trick I will use on my next Spook.
