I have (well its on its way via snail mail) an Airfix 1/72 Hawker Demon. Yes I thought what a good looking aircraft (after my love for the Fury) but is the model any good? photos of finnished articals would be cool and comments?

(thanks to Acky190 BTW)

I did one a year or so ago as an Osprey (with some minimal changes).

It built up very well, with nice detail, crisp moulding and only a few ejector tower blemishes on the undersides of the wings. Enjoy your build!

Fredt :)

The AZ Silver Demon thread refers to the Airfix Demon and a build by Carl T. I like the Airfix version and built it many years ago sans rigging. A few years back I rigged it and added an Aeroclub scarff ring and gun. Otherwise OOB and it looks like what it says on the box.

cheers guys for the info looking forward to taking a look and starting it now.

Gengriz I am liking the Osprey very much.

Looks like a lot of detail will be done in the cockpit, maybe I will make a Lobsterback gun turret for it, were these used in service?

I made one up with a scrathbuilt full interior over on the Airfix Tribute forum about a year ago. I have a few pictures on this site in the ready for inspection section. I used some of the old Modeldecals sheet for the markings. It turned out very well considering how old the kit is. Carl T :speak_cool:

Would that be this one by chance?

I am part way through one. I have taken all the rib detail off the flying surfaces which takes the basic dimensions of the wing back down to what it was in its original guise as the Airfix Hart wing, i.e. the correct thickness. (The vastly over-done rib detail is carved into the moulds for the original Hart and therefore greatly thickens the wings).

The tricky part is going to be putting new rib dtail on, which I intend to do with stretched sprue and liquid cement.

I like the kit but it does take some work.

I built one years ago, and found when offered to plans published in SAM that the fuselage was well short by a good 2-4 feet immediatley behind the rear cockpit

...and yet it matches the plans in the new Mushroom book perfectly...... :hmmm:

It also matches the Granger plans in "On Silver Wings" & is approximately 2 mm shorter than the AZ Model kit , the difference seemingly spread evenly throughout the entire fuselage .

First look at the actual kit and it is very good. Raised details which I am not a fan off but I can lightly sand them down to near flat and when painted they should look good.

As for the wings, personally I feel they are too heavy and am working on ways to replacing the detail here. Prehaps with very thin slivers of decal for each rib (I may use this idea for the stringers inside the fuselage also?) followed by a few coats of primer.

I picked up a little hint for cutting dead straight lines of decal buy fixing two new blades together with a spacer inbetween to give even width, I have not tried this yet so this is a good oportunity to do so.

I have one in the stash, and have always thought that the tailfin looks too small and the wrong shape a la Tiger Moth. But I have never checked it against anything, so I could be talking nonsense.

Curiously though, the Vickers machine gun is once of the nicest I have ever seen on any kit, if I recall correctly...

thats awesome!

I love the detail you have created inside and that metalwork on the cowl looks stunning

It is the one & the same. I am flattered that you took the time to look it up. It was a fun build. I hope you enjoy building yours too. Carl T :speak_cool:
