My 1st of two entries in this GB, I'll be building it in tandem with a MiG-29 for the Soviet in Foreign Service GB. Will post pics at the weekend.

Made a start on this about a week ago, I'm using the Italeri kit, but going with the Tamiya paint instructions. So far I've primed and preshaded the interior, added some milliput cushioning to the seats. I went to start painting and discovered I'm missing some paints for the interior. I got what I needed today at the LHS and will restart this hopefully tomorrow or wednesday. Will post pics then.

Had to add some weight in the nose (nearly forgot this!)

After my hamfisted job of glueing this kit together (which I'm sure has a decent fit for most people!) I filled and sanded all gaps, recribed some lines and primed the whole thing.

Decals on, there were no squadron insignia decals on the sheet <_<

Wash with tempera paints, canopy just dry-fitted. Undercarraige and missiles added.

Given a flatcoat to make it less shiny, wingtip lights and nose light added. Front of canopy fitted.

Just need to paint and fit the wheelwell doors and fit the PE mirrors on the canopy. Nearly there!

Really nice work there Keith. Have a biased opinion as I do like the TWU squadron gray/green scheme but it's a quality job you are making there.

It was sunny here all day so I couldn't take some pics on light grey paper like I normally do, so I took some on the base I made last year.

That does look like a Hawk! I particularly like the 'moody' shot from the rear.

But, for that extra bit of realism, always remember that any RAF Aircraft is festooned with Safety 'Remove Before Flight' Tags, which are attached to Safety Pins that must be removed by the pilot as he does his 'Pre Flight' Walkround check of the aircraft.

These are normally - the undercarriage, in the Pylons and also in the weapons themselves. The missiles also have 'Noddy Caps' that cover the seeker head, to protect it from 'Contact Damage'.

The number of safety tags depends on the status of the aircraft - if the aircraft is in for any servicing, there are more items blanked off - i.e. all intakes/exhausts and, usually, any openings that a bird could make a home in!

The only thing I could fault your model for is that the Vane on the Flap Leading Edge has about nine inches removed from it's outer edge on both vanes - I think this was because of airflow issues over the tailplane at high angles of attack.

Phil, I bought this kit from luckymodel.com in Hong Kong, it works out around €23 inc P&P (so about £20), thats nearly a tenner cheaper than my LHS.

Thanks for the tips Brian, the kit instructions are crappy B&W photo type diagrams and not very clear on the placement of parts, also, ther're no marks on the leading edges of the wings to indicate where the vanes should go. So I matched them with the plan view in the painting diagram. I guess I should have looked for some photos of the real thing. I've seen builds here with all the tags and intake/exhaust covers in place and they look really good. I might have a go at scratch building some for it, keep an eye out for an update.

The Hawk has really grown on me during this build, it's one cool looking aircraft! B) I'm looking forward to the next build, can't wait to get started.

Fantastic job Muller, love it, especially as its a Chivenor Hawk. I used to see that very aircraft in that scheme all the time.

Just one question about the sidewinders, I may be totally wrong but were the Hawks were upgraded to T1a standard after the camo scheme became obsolete - i'm sure Mark would be able to confirm that - they look great on it though!

Errors that I wouldn't have a clue about are glaringly obvious to you guys :D The sidewinders are not glued on so I can take them off if they're wrong. I can fit the fuel tanks instead, or would they have ever been fitted?? Another thing the kit instructions don't mention is the what colour the tanks should be painted.

I've been looking for some pics of the tags and covers fitted to a hawk, Marks reference shots don't have the intakes or exhaust covered, only the red and white striped tags fitted. I found some pics here of XX172 with them on. Would the covers have been the same kind used on this hawk when it was camo'd?

Hi Muller, i'm no expert and i'm not 100% about the sidewinders, although I don't ever recall seeing them on a camo Hawk and I spent most of my youth watching them at Chivenor!

They usually carried a rocket pod under one wing and practice bomb dispenser on the other. Personally i'd leave them on as it looks great, its a really great model, far better than I could ever do.

Edited to add, I stand corrected, just found a photo on Airlines with a 63 Sdn Hawk with Sidewinder Missile pod, so leave them on!!!

Yes, these are the aforesaid engine intake and jet exhaust 'Blanks' and 'Remove Before Flight' Tags that are always fitted when the aircraft is on the ground.

They are only removed for Inspection purposes by the Groundcrew, after which they were re-fitted, or when the Pilot was doing his 'Pre-Flight' Checks on the aircraft, before he climbed into the cockpit.

All this equipment would be rolled up and secreted away on the aircraft, in case the aircraft landed somewhere it did not intend to - or if the 'Land-Away' was at an Airshow, as per your example!

These Blanks were not high-tech, we could have them made up locally on the RAF Station. They were made of a green, plastic type material, which used to have an elasticated band fitted around the periphery, to enable the blank to fit around the intake/exhaust, and it was secured by adjustable straps which were pulled taught, to ensure the blank stayed on the aircraft.

The Undercarriage Pins that were always fitted when the aircraft was on the ground were part of the aircraft equipment and always had a High-Viz striped tag fitted, to ensure that the fact that an aircraft had a pin fitted in any Landing Gear was obvious.

Cheers Brian! Thanks for the information, I'll try making some tags & covers at the weekend. The tags should be pretty straightforward, I'll use foil from the top of a wine bottle, I'll try and have a go at making the covers with some rolled out milliput.
