Gene K
Phil, OUTSTANDING! Based on your build thread, I started a shopping list since I want to try Vallejo Model Air paints (which you evidently like). I came across the Vallejo site which gave this color chart - which is confusing, to say the least. For example it lists FS34102 as VMA 011 (which is then crossed to FS34089), then as VMA096, etc....and you used VMA092. SO, would you confirm that you use (and I need) the following for the USAF SEA scheme: VMA026 = FS30219 VMA092 = FS 34102 VMA016 = FS34079 VMA045 = FS36622 I've read that the Vallejp paint doesn't need thinning - do you thin, and if so with what? Thanks, Gene K

Thanks, Gene K Thats the ones Gene, The Vallejo paint chat dose have some funny names for it's own colours, but if you stick with the FS numbers you cant go wrong. For the main bulk spraying, I spray it straight from the bottle, but when I'm doing the edges of the camo I put a few drops of Tamiya X-20A thinners in. When I'm happy how the camo looks, I add even more thinners and turn the pressure down to sharpen up the camo and take care of any oversprayed areas. Sometimes it leaves it a slightly diferent colour (usaley lighter) but i think it adds to the look. Hope that helps Edited November 23, 2007 by Phil @ Promodeller

Thanks, Phil. I'm off to the hobby shop. Although the Vallejo site lists FS numbers, they are inconsistent between charts. Further, there are other cross references on the web that list, in some cases, FS numbers for the Vallejo paints different than the Vallejo charts. But since the colors you used looked right on (maybe VMA045 may be a tad dark?), I asked. When I was stationed at Bitburg in the early seventies, the 33TFW had a dedicated Air Defense squadron - the 525TFS - that was the first unit on base to get the F-4E. Their sister AD squadron was at Ramstein - the 526TFS - also F-4Es. However, I remember them as the Black Knights (red tail band). (looks like a Falcon on the inboard - a load for your next Phantom?) I believe the F-4E you modeled was from the 512 TFS Dragons which came to the 86TFW around 1977. (Edit - I just saw Eric2020's post saying the same thing) Gene K Edited November 23, 2007 by Gene K

I had to make the change as I wanted the sharks mouth for the TAM in 1980
