Another Anson - NZ418

Recommended Posts

Wolfie, you might be right.

I decided I needed to add the tiny photo etched actuators and hinge covers to the wings before painting. These minute pieces of brass totally defeated me, the contact surfaces are mimiscule and even with tweezers, a good light, reading glasses and thick superglue the little so and so's defied me.

So I have fabricated new parts using an old staple and plastic card. They are now setting and went on easily. I remember now why I hate etched brass.

Anyway the sun is out, I passed my exam and am going away for the weekend. Mind you it gives the Anson time to think up another trick or two! :D

Actually I'm an expert and have a bit of paper to prove what 37 years of experience doesn't.

Always going away this w/e and missing Cosford.

The details have dried ok and the actuator cables will be added after painting fron stretched sprue.

Hi Andy, popped over to this thread from that Do17 one I started.

Nice work! But you've destroyed the nice image I had in my head of this kit being an easy build ;-)

Do you know any good online references? I'm trying to verify CA's postwar markings for RN NK941, since the only two photos I can find look nothing like what CA suggest!

Hope you get the beast done!

Cheers

Jon

Hi Andy,

Have been reading this with pleasure and not a little sympathy given that I have been running this kit in between other projects for the past 7 months. Currently I have the basic airframe complete with the engines and cowls on and the evil canopy fitted, sanded and reasonably leveled off (primer will tell all though!). Mine is planned as a turreted trainer with yellow undersides and DG/DE camo, but I suspect and hope yours will be finished before mine!

Nothing I know of on line other than a Brett Green build the other place, certainly no plans, I'm using a mixture of old Aeromodeller plans for 19 and frozen to death, an article and plans in SAMI, were the builder had no real issues, so I must be me and a couple of bits and piece my father had. Peter Mossong has just got some nice shots of the interior of one in NZ and he usualy posts such things in Walkrounds.

So not an easy build but do-able, I lost my mojo with it because I wanted it to be soooo good. Hopefully the first of ther upper surface colours will be on tomorrow.

Cheers

The evil canopy; I like it it. makes me feel like I'm not a complete novice. The undercarriage takes a bit of thinking about, I tacked it into place and the commited superglue when I was sure both sides were level. Of course as I had to sand the wheel halves they will no doubt make it look lop sided. Good look with yours.

Cheers

The good weather means that I got both top side colours on in a single day. First the NZ Ocean Blue which was a colour produced for the RNZAF by a paint company called BALM. It was used to replace the Dark Earth on RAF Camouflaged types such as the Hudson, Hind and some P-40s. NZ418 was completely re-painted so the pattern varied from the A or B schemes normally seen.

I used Gunze Sanyo paints exclusively, they work for me and they are decal ready.

Ok the next step is to paint the wheel bays and attach the pre-painted undercarriage. Once I'm happy with that decalling will commence. Then it is just the wheels, exhausts, D/F loop and turret.

Like the title says, lots of progress this weekend. The undercarriage is in place and solid and the decals are done. Lots of details to paint and a bit of fettling with the turret, but I might actually get this one done!

Never refer to yourself as an expert (ex as in has been and spurt as in drip under pressure).

Nice to see all's going well until you drop on the garage floor after varnishing it......................................It's cursed I tell 'ee!

Looking pretty good now Andy. Amazing how a build starts to come alive after paint and decals!

You've got the (NZ) Blue Sea Grey spot on - what Gunze colour did you use for it - PRU Blue?

Cheers,

Pete M.

A mix of USN Intermediate blue and PRU blue, very much an approximation. As Wolfpack says i'll probably drop the thing on a concrete floor just as I finished it. Still I've actually enjoyed this restarted project and I have Kiwi Resin Airtrainer to finish so who knows that might get done as well. Thanks for the photos, I wasn't sure what the serial of the Anson was, can you remember? Anyway off to bed now, enjoy your Sunday.

A bit more work on her today. The resin exhausts proved difficult to remove from the casting blocks I got the stub exhausts and one of the long pipe exhausts off with no damage but the other long one shattered. Some Contrail tubing and a little brute force and ignorance saved the day. The wheels are painted as are the oil coolers.

NZ418 carried no Vickers K gun in the photos I have but I can't tell what remained of the mechanism in the turret. So I've approximated some of the parts on the basis that a navigation trainer would use the spae to carry an extra trainee navigator.

Next up is the matt coat and then the masking of the turret.

I managed to varnish her last night and removed the masking. The Eduard stuff has been on for four years but came off pretty cleanly. One window had paint seepage so was replaced with clear sheet.

So just the propellors and turret then I can more her to RFI, in a strange way I'll be sorry when this project is over but I'm in no hurry to start the other from my stash
