Talking of Hunters. . F.4

What is this "Paint peeling" you talk of? Oh, wait a minute, I use Gunze Mr Color, But I think I recall what paint peeling was!

I'm toying with another FGA.9 shortly, but I'm in a quandary. . . part of me really wants to do an Indian target tug in MSG/DG uppers with aluminium lowers, and part wants to do one of the Brawdy/Chivenor TWU aircraft. . I don't know what it is about those planes, but they always look a bit beefier and heavyweight than other FGA.9's to me. . .

Mr Color? He's a smug bugger!!

I've always liked the Wittering based FGA9's of 45 and 58 Sqn's - especially with the asymetric loads on the outer pylons......

But wait a min....I can feel the urge to build a II(AC) Sqn FR10....................

Went together fine - slapped the Xtracrylic DSG and Dark Green on last night, added a coat or two of Johnson's..all nice & glossy, masked & ready for the undersurfaces with Maskol tape..re-positioned it AND...bugger, tits & bum's...the paint PEELED off spectacularly!!

You used Maskol? An ammonia based masking fluid on an ammonia soluble clear coat and an ammonia based paint?

Ooops!

Nooo...a slip of the keyboard...I meant Tamiya masking tape!! Doh..haven't seen Maskol for ages......not since Humbrol went pear-shaped;

Though I have used Maskol on Xtracylic before...and it never peeled - it gave it a funny "sheen" IIRC, but never peeled......

Hi Drewe,

Great stuff and remarkable progress, but what with leaving it so long to compliment you on your progress in this thread, I'm a tad concerned that this post won't be seen...... perhaps I should be looking for the 'ready for inspection' already! I hope your kit continues as well as the photos indicate, which would be bloody well.... In your earlier question about the deliberate mistake, my eye completely skipped over the flap cutout indent left by Revell and simply saw that the outboard edge of the flap continued right to the trailing edge of the wing and dismissed it; should have looked harder!

The scheme you've chosen looks fascinating and some conjecture obviously accompanies it, but it seems to really suit the Hunter, as do the markings. On, on....

For Bill and Drewe, could whoever gets hold of the Revell FGA.9 first post pics of the different sprues and decals? I'm curious to know if it's worth getting one (pardon the blasphemy) or perhaps just stick with the Airfix tailpipe conversion option, and large bags from same?

Bill, I'd like to see your FR.10 in progress if you can post pics; mine's gone absolutely nowhere since last snapped. If I may belatedly answer a question about the nose conversion, it does seem a smidgeon 'blunt' but will do for me. How would you approach your kit's conversion?

Cheers,

Andrew

I'll post pic's as soon as I start it - I may take the opportunity to convert the "peeled" FGA9//the FR/PR nose shouldn't be that much of a problem - a small piece of rod to extend the nose and Milliput to fair in - then drilled out camera ports...watch out for a new thread.....

Here's a shot of the tailpipe from an "inadvertent" early release by Revell some time ago:

I think it's worth waiting for/using over the Airfix fix, especially since the decals will likely be top rate....

Mmm, I wonder if Aires got hold of that and put it out as the Quick boost one.....

The para fairing on the QB set is much longer & pointier - needs a swipe or two with wet n'dry..

AND....the new Revell FGA9 should have a decent pair of 230 gal. tanks............

Gene and Bill,

Thanks for your pics/summary. To be honest, it's a fait accomplit that I'll get at least one of the new boxings, for a whole variety of reasons including, as Gene says, the decals (whatever they may be). I think I've actually held off doing a conversion to realise one of my favourite schemes such as the 45, 58 or 79 Sqn jets on the strength of expectation of an FGA.9 release. Hang on, what about the other F.6A or FGA.9 derivatives? Oh sh*t.......

No. The Quickboost tail unit is a pretty poor effort in my view.

The Revell one looks just about right. Can't wait...this should be the 1/72nd Hunter I've been waiting for all these years!!!
