PaulR
Hi there, just a quick idea I'd like to get peoples' opinions or thoughts on. Would it be a viable idea to have a group build based on the aircraft of a specific RAF squadron? I'm thinking here that we could choose a squadron with a long history, colourful unit marks and a wide variety of aircraft and do, well, a group build on it. I was thinking possibe contenders could include squadrons such as no. 6, 11, 19, 74, 92 etc etc. Any thoughts? Paul
JohnT
For a long time I have been collecting 1/48 models of all aircraft in 111 Sqn chosen just because they were up the road at Leuchars. I should have been more careful in my choice as they flew about everything or so it seems. I'd be happy to chip if that GB got off the ground but given I have upwards of 20 types to do can the GB run for a few years !!!!!!!!! Good idea for Squadrons that flew fewer types though !! Thouyght - maybe confine the GB to a period e.g 1 Squadron RAF 1946 to date or something like that - to make it manageable
Enzo the Magnificent
I was thinking possibe contenders could include squadrons such as no. 6, 11, 19, 74, 92 etc etc. IV(AC) Sqn. Black, yellow and red. How much more colour do you want? BE2c, RE8, Bristol F2B, Armstrong Whitworth Atlas, Hawker Audax, Hawker Hector, Westland Lysander, Mustang I, Spitfire XI, Mosquito FB6, Sabre F4, Hunter F4, Swift FR5, Hunter FR10, every mark of Harrier... Royster
I might dip my toe in that GB pool. Depending on which aircraft would be available
Obi-Jiff Kenobi
Over the last few years I've been researching No. 1 (F) Sqn; they'd make a good candidate, IMHO. From 1916 (when they became a fighter squadron) they flew various Nieuports (mainly 17), SE.5a, Snipe, Siskin IIIa, Fury I, Hurricane I (fabric and metal wings), Hurricane IIB & IIC, Typhoon IB (mainly car-door, but also a few bubbles), Spitfire IX, 21, Meteor III, IV, F8, Hunter (all marks) and Harrier (all marks). They also spent a short period post-WWII as a trainer unit, but markings info for their machines is difficult to come by.
Roland Pulfrew
Paul I suggested something like this a while ago (see here). It started by generating a bit of interest but fizzled out. I would be interested in joining, given the right squadron. RP
Obi-Jiff Kenobi
Any particular squadrons you're interested in, Roly? Also on this topic, Xtradecal have of course released a few sheets recently covering particular squadrons' histories, including 6 Sqn (just released), and 617 (which has a nice selection of subjects, including Lancaster, Mosquito, Mustang III, Vulcan and Tornado). Perhaps one of these squadrons (or the others Xtradecal also cover) would make a suitable subject, with the decals being readily available.
