wally7506
A little work in progress and some documentation. The new sheet from Baracudacals has several very interesting Corsairs on it. I have chosen two of them to start work on. First is Capt. Floyd Kirkpatrick's F4U-1D named "Palpitatin' Pauli" and the other is Lt. Col. Donald Yost's "FF75". Kirkpatrick was the CO of VMF-441 at Okinawa. On April the 15th he shot down 3 Vals. He was an ace by the end of May and finished the war with 5.5 kills. Yost's FG-1D is from VMF-351 of the USS Cape Gloucester during the Summer of 1945. I've seen profiles of "his" plane with the number 59 on the side, but I never could find anything that confirmed that. These photos show his name under the windscreen of FF75 instead. The first photo of FF75 is from April 1945 when VMF-351s markings consisted of white letters and numbers only. The last picture shows the full markings of yellow characters and stripes plus the white bar on the tail and wings. FF75 is off to the left. I decided to build them both -1Ds at the same time. I started with the engines. Fine lead wire that I got from a sporting goods store (intended for making flies for flyfishing) was used to wire the electrical harness. I used 1/16" black decal strip for the push rods on the front row (I hate having to paint those things). I painted the inside of the cowls with MM Interior Green and then dirtied them up the with black, brown, and gray pastel chalk. Next I moved on to the cockpit. Detail & Scale states the upper part of the sidewalls on -1D Corsairs were black. The example they have in book looks that way also. So that's how I painted them. The seats are from Ultracast. The kit console is also painted (near) black per D & S. Notice the caution decal under the headrest from the Baracudacal sheet. Last is the instrument panel. This was done with the Baracudacal decal and then a drop of MM white glue for clear parts and windows in each bezel. That's all for now. Next I'll tackle removing the landing light on the lower wing (and replacing the rib detail). wally Edited January 6, 2011 by wally7506

Pete M.
Hi Jonathan. I look forward to watching your progress on these two. As an aside, I must get 'Flat Stanley' back from Hamilton, as he's overstaying his time down there! Must be enjoying the bush riding too much, or playing with Mike's model train outfit!!!!! And Andy, a spinning prop Corsair?????? Mind you, it's time I built another one myself! Cheers, Pete M.

Smiffy
Very impressed. Your work on the engines and the cockpits looks fantastic. I've been eyeing this decal sheet myself. Will keep a watch on this one.
wally7506
Two Tamiya 1/48 -1D Corsairs + Baracudacals WIP part 2 First, another color pic of a VMF-351 FG-1D. My FG-1D will have the wings up. Here is the fix for removing the landing light seen in part 1. The stubs for the rockets have been left off and will be added after decalling since the yellow stripes will go right over them. Notice the Ultracast flaps. After careful trimming of the kit pieces the aftermarket flaps fit beautifully. Some of you may know me as the president and founding member of the WW2-Corsair-flaps-must-be-up-club. It's one thing to model them down with the wings down. But, to model the flaps down with the wings up is an even greater violation of accuracy. That being said, my F4U-1D from VMF-441 will have the flaps DOWN. That's right, an act of heresy to my own religion. Pictures of actual Corsairs are my gospel and a vast majority of those seen at rest have the flaps UP. However, I have a couple of pictures of #422 with the flaps DOWN (gasp). So I'm using the kits pieces. I'm neither proud ... nor am I vain.
wally7506
Not sure if a ever posted the final stage of this one or not. I jumped out of the other F4U but did finish this one.
