Eduard IL-2

I went to Modelzone in Chester today and picked up Eduard's rendition of the Il-2. At £7.99 I think it's a bargain. Looking on the net, I think I may have problems with the wing/fuselage joint but \i'll tackle that as I come to it. I intend to build it straight away just to prove to herself that it won't gather dust in the 'might build' pile.I intend to build it OOB.

However, I'm in a bit of a fix with the one colour scheme provided (it's the Weekend Edition - no PE or resin). Colour call-outs on the front page are Mr. Color and I don't have any! I'm a hairy stick wielder so spray only paints are a no no. Going to the Ulitmate Color Guide reference I have found some Humbroll matches, but there are still blanks. If anyone can help I'll be very grateful.

C004 - yellow ?

C022 - Dark Earth - Humbrol 29

C032 - dark gray - ?

C045 - sail color ?

C303 - green - Humbrol 86

C309 - green _- Humbrol 116

C311 - gray - Humbrol 129

To add to my frustration there appear to be a whole separate set of colours referred to on the camouflage marking page and are referred to as GSi colours??!!? I haven't a clue about these

Yellow H4/4 (same as above?)

Light blue -/74

Dark Grey H83/32 (same as above?)

Light Brown H72/22 (if the same as above why is it not dark earth?)

Green H303/303 (same as above?)

Sorry to be dense about this but any Humbrol/Revell/Vallejo tie ups will be gratefully received.

I will of course post the completed build here!

Thanks in advance

Trevor

Hi Max,

I checked the instructions on Eduard website (Kit no7410), the aircraft is wearing the bottom version of the standard 1943 NKAP 3-color upper camo.

The colors are AMT-4 Green , AMT-1 light brown (grey brown) and AMT-12 dark grey (Or their slightly yellowed versions A-24m, A-21m, A-32m) . Underside is AMT-7 blue.

Prop blades AMT-6 Black, cockpit, well, ALG-5 Green primer or the nominal A-14 steel grey over ALG-5, A-14 also goes inside the wheel wells.

Speaking Humbrol:

AMT-4 - I would prefer Hu-114, or in a pinch Hu-151 or Hu 105

AMT-1 - Is there an eqvivalent do Tamiya/Model Master NATO brown?

AMT-12 - Hu-32

AMT-7 - 50/50 mix Hu47+Hu65. (I rather like my old tin of Hu-115 for faded look)

A-14 - Hu-27 looks good, or maybe add a drop of white.

ALG-5 - a 50/50 mix A-14 with your choice of Yellow/orange zinc chromate color (real mix was 50/50 A-14 and ALG-1 Zinc chromate).

I also see that Massimo updated his VVS color table http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/colors/color-table.html

Vedran!

Many thanks! Lots of lovely detail there.

Trevor

I wouldn't even try to add to Vedran's excellent post; all I wanted to mention is that, regarding one of your original questions, GSi is the new name for Gunze products, IIRC!

I believe the GSi paints are the lacquer-based Gunze paints, as opposed to the Mr. Color water-based ones. And I agree, Vedran's post is very helpful. I'm writing down that information myself.

Close. Mr Color is the acrylic lacquer (solvent based) and Mr Hobby (formerly Aqueous Hobby Color) is the so called water based version. Note however that while Mr Hobby is called 'water based', alcohol (or Tamiya's X-20A thinner) is the preferred thinning agent.
