Rodders Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 Hi, I'm trying to start on the interior of the Academy M3 Honey, and have the eduard etched set for it. I was looking for some pictures or colour information on the radio, as the instructions have you paint it green. But, what colour would the front of the radio be, Can anyone help. Plus, how to handle the turret basket. Do i just cut the legs of, or just leave it out altogether. Please forgive my ignorance, this is my first British desert tank, Thanks.
ChrisITA Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Hi Rodders I presume you're doing it as a British tank? in which case the radio is a number 19 WT set. The case should be SCC15 or olive drab at a pinch, The 'face' should be a pale grey. I also took these a little while ago inside a British Honey, they may be some use, note that the gun mount and remainder of the barrel and recuperator housing are olive drab: Hope that helps Chris
Rodders Posted December 2, 2010 Author Posted December 2, 2010 Thanks Chris, Thats just what i'm looking for. Looking at the pictures, i see there's a turret basket. I've asked a few places and was told to leave it out. Now i'm confused, was the Honey you photographed an early one used in the desert?. But thank you so much for the help, Regards.

Sorry Rodders, you are correct. The academy kit is an M3, which did not have a basket. The basket was introduced from the M3A1 onwards Chris

ChrisITA Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Sorry Chris,I wasn't being critical, i take it i just leave the turret basket out altogether, Thanks. No, my fault, I didn't read your question properly the first time! I've built this one, but years ago, so I can't quite remember it. If you post a couple pics of the turret parts we can have a good look at what might need doing?
Buzby061 Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Chris, some really useful pictures there. Thanks for posting them. Was the radio intended for a Valentine (or something similar) going to Russia as it looks like English & Cyrillic on the placards? Pete
Rodders Posted December 3, 2010 Author Posted December 3, 2010 Hi, Yes i noticed the writing, too. Good point.
ChrisITA Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Hi,Yes i noticed the writing, too. Good point. its because it was made in canada. A great number of british material made under lend lease license in canada was sent to Russia in the form of Valentines and Matildas. Of course, when the factory made the radios they didn't necessarily know if the tank or vehicle it was going to be fitted to would be destined for Russia or the UK, so they labelled them with both Chris
Buzby061 Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 (edited) Thanks Chris. It certainly is an education reading these forums! Pete Edited December 3, 2010 by Buzby061
Rodders Posted December 4, 2010 Author Posted December 4, 2010 Thanks Chris, I'll try and take some photos asap. Thank you again for your help, Rodders.
Rodders Posted December 9, 2010 Author Posted December 9, 2010 Hi Chris, I've got some pictures here, and the instructions if that's any good, No, my fault, I didn't read your question properly the first time! ChrisITA Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Hi Rodders, It looks like its mostly a case of just the basket off then. The only thing I'm not sure of is the seats. I imagine seats would have been included for the turret crew (otherwise they'd have to stand on the fighting compartment ammo stowage all the time) so you may way to jury rig a way of getting those in. I'm afraid my knowledge does not extend to these and how they were attached/ positioned As much as I don't like to refer people away from one site; you might like to register on missing-lynx.com and ask in the Allied forum. There are a lot of guys on there who are very knowledgable on US built armour. One of them might have a diagram of the M3 interior Good luck with it Chris
Rodders Posted December 9, 2010 Author Posted December 9, 2010 Hi Chris, Thank you so much for the help, really appreciated. I'll leave the basket out. Thanks.
Mike Starmer Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 Hi Chris,Thank you so much for the help, really appreciated. I'll leave the basket out. Thanks. Leave out the turret basket, seats for driver and lap gunner and a sling I think for the commander, the others hung on. When in action the gunner and loader had to run around the fighting compartment as the turret rotated. That is the sort of thing that happens when the designers don't have to use their creation.

If you are intending to finish this tank in British desert colours marked as the kit then totally ignore the painting instructions. The drawing is fiction and the colours based on almost medieval hearsay. Do not buy the Lifecolor set No.6 Desert Colors either, they are completely wrong too. I am currently working on an article about the scheme applied to 4th A.B. Stuarts. I can provide colour chips and accurate disruptive pattern for this tank. Mail me.
