Okdoky Posted November 28, 2010 Posted November 28, 2010 Holly moved on from her first ever Family build of the Airfix White Half Track and Trailer to her first ever tank. Airfix Churchill in 1/76 Holly is just 7

Okdoky Posted November 28, 2010 Author Posted November 28, 2010 nice start... think i built the churchill when i was 7 - i certainly didn't sand it!!!!! Hi Rob For a kit of the age it is, it is surprising how little flash or sprue connection needed sanding. I was impressed how well Holly took to working with all the tiny pieces that this kit holds. Even the fact that the running gear involved great repetition, she did not get bored. She is a lot less ham fisted than I ever was at her age. Some more pics of todays building Holly keeps a neat and tidy work table ,,,,,,,, unlike her dad Nige
Okdoky Posted November 28, 2010 Author Posted November 28, 2010 Holly attacks the turret Some really tiny parts to work on ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but she has mastered the art of glueing without pasting the whole model with finger prints. Nige
Okdoky Posted November 29, 2010 Author Posted November 29, 2010 Thanks Rob and Overhaulin for the encouragement !!!!!!! Holly is fair chuffed ! Holly says she likes to read books about the tanks and about the army. She was busy playing in the snow while I was at work today but still was desperate to get the tool boxes and spare track links on to the sides. :-? :-? Holly herself was quick to point out that the Churchill tank tracks don't fit and wonders what every one else has done to fit the tracks properly. :-? :-? Any suggestions for her :-? :-? Thanks folks
Murdo Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 Lovely stuff Nige! Wish my 6yo could keep her attention going that long. She started a 1/32 Revel Tiger Moth that is still roughly in bits.

Hi Murdo I went on the basis of cheap n chearfull Airfix kits, which are by no means easy to get together due to little quirks of the instructions and the parts fit in places. We have got to have her figure out how to get the tracks joined together as her dad remembers how the instruction sheet method of toasting the ends with a warm screwdriver normally left you with a molton mush that failed to stay together no matter how hot or cold the blade would be. As well as that, there was the chance of ending up with molten fingers too. Dad has put into her head about needle and thread to see if she can figure out what might be another way of pulling the ends together. Was hoping for some hints and tips from others who might know ways that might work just as well for her to think about too. Nige

Thanks folks good to see this build. how about using staples across the join? fit the tracks with the join at the bottom (so no one sees it), and then fit the sprocket wheels. Rex
Mike Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 Good on her for being so keen Those fiddly parts would have me delving on the carpet within 5 minutes
Okdoky Posted November 30, 2010 Author Posted November 30, 2010 Good on her for being so keen Those fiddly parts would have me delving on the carpet within 5 minutes Mike It were only the fact that we do not have a carpet that many of the parts were so easily found. Not that Holly had the parts pinging off the sprues when cutting as she was so carefull. It was more the delicate manouvering of the parts that saw them go balistic. A few times we had to hunt for quite a while but every part is accounted for. Rex Holly says staples sounds good. Thanks for that. Nige
vonmarkenhausen Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 (edited) Hats off to Holly a future artiste! Edited December 5, 2010 by vonmarkenhausen
blimp Posted December 5, 2010 Posted December 5, 2010 that's a great job on something so fiddly! - p.s. have the track join at the top , the upper hull 'mudguard' hides it all .
Mike Starmer Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 First off, well done Holly. Use Bambi Staples 2 on each track, been doing that for years and make sure that they are on top and hidden when the model is finished.
Okdoky Posted September 2, 2011 Author Posted September 2, 2011 (edited) Holly and I finally got around to trying a bit of painting. Long overdue, but Holly has not lost the taste for model building. Desperate to get the Churchill painted and get on to the 1/32 Do 27 she won as a raffle prize. Here she is paint brush in hand. Me painting up the Bedford MK with her Me thinks she is still hooked Nige Edited September 2, 2011 by Okdoky
thx6667 Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 Doing a better job of that kit than I did at her age - D-Day Battlefront set, the Chruchill drove me mad!
Natter Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 Totally fantastic to see the future of our hobby doing a fabulous job. I hope she keeps that obvious enthusiasm. Can't wait to see it done, and the Do27 too.
Col. Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 That's brilliant work she's doing there Nige! Kind of depressing when your 7-year old daughter is making a better job of building her model than I can
