AnonymousER99
As I can't find an Airfix F.1 I'm probably going to use an Aeroclub vac Lightning; I've got an F.1, F.3, F.6 (possibly more than one of each) so I hope I can make a good job of it as I don't really fancy hacking one of these up either. I'd really like to make it to go with my Dynavector TSR-2, I have a print by Keith Aspinall called 'Testing Time' that show the two together during the TSR-2 test flights. Karl Karl Are you fancying an Airfix Lightning with a CMK set??? I am 99.999% positive I have a spare. Would you be the least bit interested?? Mike Bloodyell Mike, you'll need some Zeppelin sized ferry tanks to get a Lightning across the Atlantic You'll also have no models left at this rate! Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but there's no such thing as a "spare" Lightning?

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but there's no such thing as a "spare" Lightning? I just looked at my master kit list and I have three Lightnings. I rather fancy the F.6 myself so dumping my one and only f.3 (or do I have 2 F.3s??) is no big deal. What can I say?? I have a love affair with non US jets unless they are the Mighty Eagle!! BTW Bill, I remember your Lightning articles from SAMI!! Your T.4/5 conversion with the Aeroclub conversion brought back some fond reading memories!! Mike
Whooaa! If you've only got one F.3 (a designation that's popping up a lot in various forms here at the moment!), you should keep it (Sorry if that blows someone's chances of getting one), as it's the only one (IIRC from Nige) that can be used to depict a 2-seater. It'd be a shame to miss the opportunity Which reminds me... my kitlist is woefully out of date... last time I updated it I had less than 100!! AnonymousAA72
Very quiet in the shop this afternoon......... So I got me some Lightning modelling done......... The resin CMK wheel wells were used, and a helluva lot of plstic needs removing - on both wing halves AND the resin itself...I used my Dremel, scalpel blades and wet and dry paper...and in places the plastic is as thin as tin can be and then some more..... The kits wheel well has been removed on one of the wings... Daylight (well flourescent light) shows how little plastic was left after a good Dremeling!!!! You can just see how much plastic had to be gouged out.... Tabs were added to the leading edge parts, I need to add a shim of plastic card to the aperture to replace a bit that was damaged And this is how my T5 is at the moment...will get some paint on next week, with any luck!! AnonymousAA72
Lovleeeeee. So what paint will she wear then?. Not a great picture, its copied from AirDoc 10 - British Lightnings. Its the "Pink Flamingo" XS452 as based at RAF Akrotiri in 1975. The Aircraft was a part of 56 Sqn at the time and when they disbanded and returned home to convert to Phantom's, they left her behind -and they used her as a Station Flight 'Hack". Interestingly..'452 is still flying in South Africa as the All-Black ZU-BBD

AnonymousAA72
Time for a mini-update...hadn't touched the T5 for nearly a month, so thought I'd better get a move on! So..a thin coat of Tamiya Light Grey as primer, and Revell's "Aqua" White for the fin (as an undercoat for the pink) and a white area on the spine - which apparently kept equipment cool - baby!' She'll need a bit of tidying up - and another coat or two of white and then it'll be on to the alclad....

Fmk.6john
Nice progress there, The white bit on the spine was there to try and reflect heat and keep the avpin starter fuel cool, also the starter electricals were under there too and were tempremental in the tropical heat. Can't wait to see her finshed. John.

That is one sweet Lightning, always one of my favs. What a nice conversion and such a patient fellow you are. Lucky for me there are planty of subjects around so that I dont have to mess up something like that. Its builds like yours that let me fill me files with "how it oughta look" pics. I'll send the royalty check right on. Nice job there. Edited November 21, 2007 by dahut

Interestingly..'452 is still flying in South Africa as the All-Black ZU-BBD Hi Bill Almost. I worked on this one back then just after the 'troubles' when the Turks invaded. We (11 Sqdn) went out to Cyprus to re-pat 56 who went to Wattisham to as you said reform on Phantoms. The plan was each remaining Frightning Sqdn would 'cycle' through with 111 lined up to replace us. As it turned out the other half off 11 replaced us and we went back to Binbrook. 452 came back later in the year with 11 where she was de-flamingoed and given her pair of eagles. She later went to LTF to form part of that small neucleus of a/c on that flight. Changing her eagles for a Lion. and given a coat of DG similar to the RAFG F2's. We had 458 wich was Grey, 417 and 457 retaining their 'natural' look. The F3's we had were also a mix of camo and 'natural'. Model wise she looks great so far and look forward to seeing her in 'pink'! Adrian

AnonymousAA72
Right.. As someones asked about the CMK resin set, thought I'd post a few pic's taken since I last posted onthat thread! So........Two years older and here's where my T5 is currently. Decided to build her in 74Sqn markings now... Thats Two Mikes resin intake a cone and FOD cover BTW. Stalled a bit due to various other considerations , including the resin intake bullet breaking! So I need to reinstall that, add the Intake cone and FOD, undercarriage seats canopy etc., Plain sailing!
zero
Bill thats looking lovely. I'd love to get hold of a two seater set for one of mine, getting used to razor sawing lightnings in to shape, after correcting my wings on my build. Thanks Airfix for packing the wrong bits in the box!!!! GRHHHHH! Nice work mate (as always!) Dave Edited February 6, 2010 by zero

You can't have enough Lightnings!! Sadly there was little point Bill, the wings were glued on and therefore unremovable. I had just done that before reading the thread again. Thankfully I seem to have sorted it, with a bit more effort than the kit should have needed, but were there all the same Dave PS your right Bill, you can never have enough Lightning, Phantoms, kits.
