youngtiger1
Nick, thanks for the information on the kit and your input. I will sure to keep that in mind once I make my decision. I really like the gun. It look so real. I think the bullet belt has a lot to do with that. Keep up the good work. Mike
nick
Got some work done today - made the first wing panel (of six!) The kit is quite crude really in some respects, none of the vertical bracing is provided on each rib, so I have added this. The wing tip ribs are provided solid with a plastic wing tip - that will need sorting out. Also got some more work done on the fuse and cockpit area, this is shaping up OK I think now. PS don't suppose anyone has any details on the fuel system and wiring for this aircraft do they - Struggling to find decent references Thanks for looking Nick

Spellbinder99
Great work, I have all the parts of the Hatchette partwork version of this kit so I am interested in how you are going. The partwork version has most of the plastic parts like guns, engine and such in metal, but they are not great castings and need a lot of cleaning up. The one upside is the prop is supplied in laminated wood. Cheers Tony

It's not great, but I reckon it must be going on thirty years old or so as I remember hankering after one as kid. Nick
crookedmouth
Those guns have come out a treat. Very nicely done so far...
nick
My copy of Paul Leamans Fokker DRI Triplane has arrived today. I've halted work as I've started to realise the level of inaccuracies in this kit, there are lots of things designed to make it easy to assemble that are nothing like accurate and will all need attention Just made a big job even bigger. Also toying with scratch building some wire wheels - in for a penny.... Watch this space Nick Edited November 17, 2010 by nick
nick
Well, I think I've solved my turnbuckle problem. Also got the second Spandau mostly finished (bar the woodwork) As well as having a go at painting the leather on the seat cushion Armed with my new book, some VERY thin plywood and a load of strip wood, I shall be correcting the wings next. Bughunter
Great work! This report reminds me of my building of that model some years ago. It "flies" below ceiling of the living room since then. But I have to say your work on the details is moving that model to the next level! Have fun, Frank
nick
Today's update, more rigging done Laminated a plywood wing tip rib (its curved which you can't really see in this shot, so I clipped the ribs of the plastic kit item and laminated two thin sheets of ply and clamped to hold the curve), drilled out the kit last wing rib rib which was incorrectly solid Tailskid (which is plastic) painted up with oils to look like wood Tail assembly completed Painted the control column, again with oils. Scratch made the plates that go under the rudder pedals by scribing ali sheet. The screws are from a handy watch makers set I got off evil-bay Put the edging on the seat So a fair bit of progress for me Thanks for looking Nick Edited December 10, 2010 by nick
nick
I've just realised that I have one sheet of ply parts duplicated, which is OK, BUT also one missing, which is not. This will force my hand actually, the missing sheet is wing boxes which have very un-scale tabs to aid construction. I was considering scratch building them anyway. There's my answer then. Considering the price of this kit, I do seem to be chucking a lot of it away )-: I can't see that the guns and ammo boxes are right either now. More scrapage. Oh yeah and the 'bulkhead' behind the piolts seat should be canvas not ply. Another job. While I'm at it, the fuel tank isn't right either, it should be a dual fuel/oil tank and have a second filler on the other side. As I said. Pocher. I wouldn't say don't buy this kit (yet) but there is a lot wrong with it. Nick Edited November 22, 2010 by nick

Bobs_Buckles
Sorry Nick, I've just seen this thread for the first time. I've not been around much on the forums of late due to 'Buckle madness syndrome'. All I can say is WOW!!!! Your Turnbuckles look great as does everything else. Will keep two eyes firmly on this thread from now on. Well done. Von Buckle

nick
I can't see that the guns and ammo boxes are right either now. More scrapage. Found some drawings for the ammo boxes now- as I suspected the kit items are a mile out and about one third the depth they should be. nick
Devised a process for adding the vertical stiffeners to the wing ribs en-mass by simply laying them all out between a pair of clamped straight edges and adding the stiffeners as continuous strips, clamping down and trimming later. Should save a bit of time as well as getting the alignment consistent. Then more buckles and string. Really do need to figure out a way of building some wire wheels next Nick Edited November 25, 2010 by nick
nick
This weekend I've mostly been gluing ribs onto wing boxes. And plenty of them. Also had a go at scratch building an ali box section that carries the axle for the landing gear. The kit has this as wood which once again is wrong. Got a rough version which I will redo now I have figured it out properly. Still thinking about wire wheels Nick Edited November 29, 2010 by nick
nick
No updates this week, been entertaining my boss from Japan and then stuck in snowy London all week. Back up North tomorrow, snow permitting Nick
nick
Back home despite the weather. Finished scratch building the torsion box for the undercarriage wing properly now. Wasn't happy with my first attempt so did it again. I found some 8mm ali three sided box section in B&Q of all places that I used to stiffen this and form the outer ali shell I then added the ply cheek pieces that carry the ribs and brass fasteners Here it is lashed up with the ribs The kit just had all this a wooden box with out of scale tabs again Here is the full-size Nick Edited December 4, 2010 by nick
nick
Finished the undercarriage stub wing Here you can see the bungee cord suspension Also started to scratch build scale ammo cases tried to get an engine finish on them with a rotary bronze brush Also re-worked the throttle with a scratch built handle and fittings Oh yeah and more rigging Thanks for looking Nick Edited December 5, 2010 by nick

nick
Well it's official, this aircraft has A LOT of wings, 7 by my reckoning (if you include the undercarriage) I've currently part built 5 and have got into a rhythm now. This kit is becoming a battle of wills now, there is so much dull, repetitive stuff and corrections it's becoming a pain. I will post some fotos later Nick
