I can appreciate the time it takes with the scratch building mate as i'm finding out with my A-7 Corsair! It seems to be taking age's and some times you just have to do things again because your just not happy with certain things. You seem to be a bit quicker than me at it though! Then again ....i've never been a power builder! I can see what a lot of folk see in the resin bits and only touching the likes of Tamigawa!

Sterling work on yours so far mate!

Respect!

Nobby

Hi Nobby

Thanks for your input mate. Im going to be honest with you though.......I have only used after sales stuff like P.E and Resin once before and I found that it was taking away the enjoyment of scratch building and Modelling in general,so I never went there again! If I ever need to vamp up a cockpit or a wheel well here or there I would never think of spending a chuffing fortune on after sales gear! I would attempt to make it my self. Ofcourse its Horses for Courses I know but I just love the challenge of trying to make something out of nothing.

Any way sorry to rant on

Having said all that.............Ive seen your A7 and it looks great so far.....keep at it Nobby!

Cheers mate

Hi guys

Since my last post I have been battling with the undersides of this Spitfire!........and to be honest with you I would have less problems and more joy if I had Scratch built the whole thing in the first place! .....My fault really as I used the old Airfix kit from the 70s.....I should have scratch built this or at least got hold of a more up to date kit before I started!!

This leaves me with a bit of a dilemma!...........I want to finish this project ...after all I started it over 2 years ago...and I believe I have put so much effort into it but to be honest with you ....looking at the last couple of days work....I can't be assed! :( ...I even asked me missus!! she told me to continue...too much water under the bridge etc etc.......I don't know!!

So this is the mess I have done in the last couple of days!........

look at the flash on this baby!....... :o

spitunderside001.jpg

...and even if one tidy's it up ...the fit looks dodgy!

I tried to do some work on the undercarriage legs as seen in this next photo...I will still need to do more but will wait untill they are fixed into the wings. When I did a dry run on placing the undercarriage legs on.............yes you guessed it...........the lugs that the kit provide for the fixing point are completely placed in the wrong place!...hence twisted undercart legs!!...............I think I will have to cut off the lugs on the top of each leg and try something different......here are the legs with a small amount of detail added

.....Any way...here is a photo of some of the work I have done on the wheel wells.....

spitunderside004.jpg

...and finally a photo of the starboard wheel well ,also showing the Coolant Radiator attatched..............

So, thats the update for now....sorry to be soo negative at the moment...as my mother always says.....just get on with it!! :(

Hopefully I can get these wings sorted soon...

Cheers

Hi matey. Stop or keep going - it's up to you & it wouldn't be fair to pressure you to keep doing something if you want to stop. I don't think you're a quitter though & I reckon you could see this build all the way to the end no probs.

The aileron does look $hite though :o

Can't believe you are letting the Aileron faze you old lad!!! A guy of your talent should be able to sort that no problem! Or is there something else that you are not happy about?

I felt the same about the A-7 when i first made the wings and re scribed them.....made a right man-vegetables of them the first time but i just put it to one side and started on something else. I went back to it after doing three other models and now i'm having a ball with it. I think something like yours is quite an undertaking and it's totally understandable that you feel a bit bogged down with it. Could it be that you feel you have to complete it because the whole of Britmodeller are watching? Remember... there is no pressure, most of the folk on here know what the crack is, so i'd just relax and do it at your own pace.

I hope you do carry on with it but don't get bogged with something you aren't enjoying.

I reckon you should keep going also. That Lysander was all scratch built. Why not scratch build the ailerons which is well within your talent range. You can get it to meet your exacting standards then also. All that lighting and stuff in the pit, chucked away because of an aileron, I can't just can't accept it.

Cheers

Andy

Campbell .......after a lot of thought over a rather boring film I half watched tonight.......I came to the conclusion that you are right on both accounts....yes I'm not a quitter and yes the Aileron does look $hite!!

Tomorrows another day and all that ..............and thanks for the encouragement ;)

Yea Nobby...I know what you mean....I guess I did get bogged down a bit but the trouble with me is that I'm a perfectionalist...I've just got to get it right!!...and I guess Airfix beat me today!

Hi Andy.......It did cross my mind to scratch build both Ailerons but if I can get away with making the b#$###$ fit ...... then I'll go down that path!

Thanks for your input

Hi Fozzy,

I've been watching this one quietly as my special interest is the spitfire and I didn't want to say too much.

However, I've got to sympathise with you wrt the wing. Looking at that aileron, you may be better off packing the front of it and glueing it in place rather than having it moving.

If it's any consolation, I turned down an offer of the Trumpeter kit as I was so disappointed with it. At least the basic Airfix shape is OK and you're the man when it comes to scratch building and fettling.

BTW, I watched Michael Palins programme on Thursday. He was passing through Bulgaria, heading for Turkey. Interesting.

Keep at it mate,

Dave

Hi every one

Just got back from a trip to Blighty!.....so havn't done much to the old spit but what I have done I'll show you.

Firstly ...just to say that I do take notice of info from you lot reference this build..(in particular Steve!) here is a photo of the Pilots Crow bar that seems to have every one in the world discussing the actual colour of it, ending on some forums (not this one ) at each others throats!!! :o ...I have now re painted it interior green, instead of post war red!!.....please...no coments on the crow bar being painted black instead...else I will paint it crimson pink.. ;)

spitflaps010.jpg

Fozzy, thats a beautiful looking crowbar & looks just right in the green, pink would look so.... well .....pink :puke::lol:

I've never tried to do something as involved as this re modelling but I know when I built my own house years ago, there were times I just had to walk away from it for a bit. I'd pick a small job I could do in a short time, go & do that just to put in an appearance & remind myself it was still there & then scram. I did that for a few weeks until I could face it again & then got stuck in once more. I suspect you need to do something similar. Remember, slowly slowly catchee monkey. As to the other bits you've completed, I won't try & remember all the superlatives it deserves but I will say its very damn good, very very damn good indeed.

Steve.

Hi Dave

Todays the day when I sort out this wing and Ailerons!Your absolutly right ...I'm going to pack it and glue it in position,I will also have to add some plastic to the sides of the Aileron to make it fit correctly,so wish me luck!.......Thanks for the info on Michael Palins TV trip into my neck of the woods....I have got my wife checking BBC I Player searching for it as I type!!....infact she has told me she has found it and downloading the whole series!...so Cheers ;)

Great to learn your going to press on....this is well within your skill range , of that I'm confident.

Thanks for your input and confidence J

Steve.....You are making me look stupid!...Theres me fretting about how to do this and that with a lump of plastic and you had problems building a House! :o ....Thanks for the reality check!....I feel better now!

Cheers mate

Hi Chaps

Time for a update......

I took a couple of days off as the undersides of this Airfix wing and all the bits and bobs that had to be fixed on .....just iether wouldnt go on....wouldnt fit....or basicaly looked c##p! I was actually....... :wall: ....so thats why I had a break!.....has the break from the build done any good? I asked my self this morning as I once again attacked the Ailerons!......not really!...but it has made me think that when the wings are placed onto the Fuselage and every thing is painted that I might just get away with it!...we shall see.

So I have a few Photos as an update to show you.....the first few are shots of the Undercarriage.

This is a shot of the Wheel well painted up..incidentally the Wheel well floor was made from paper card.....

This is the Oleo leg.Plastic strips were added to make it look more authentic and the up lock eye was also made from plastic card. The shine on the Hydraulic ram was achieved by gluing a piece of chrome sticky tape onto the ram!!.....

spitunderside2011.jpg

Ok chaps...thats the update done for today. The Wing section has now to be fixed onto the Fuselage. This is going to take some time as I have to offer the electric wires for the Fuselage bulbs through the base of the Wing and then feed them down the Oleo leg acting as Brake Lines.......Christ!!!

Till then

Cheers

Thanks Campbell......I bought the chrome sticky tape from an Art shop years ago and I'm starting to run low on it........I use it for all sorts of things for modelling but can I find any more of it in any Art shop or model suppliers?...can ##$@

Do you know where I can get some?
