Saw this on the static BAe Hawk at Leuchars back in September and completly forgot all about it til I looked back through some pic's today. Can anyone tell me what this little widget is?

Doesn't look like a flare/chafe dispenser but looks as though part of the assembly moves and has some purpose. Never seen or noticed this on any other Hawks before and I don't think it's a production item, more of a bolt on afterthought.

Just curious,

On a 100 Sqn Hawk perchance? Could well be a gadget for Target Towing maybe?

Thank's peep's, that was the one other thing that crossed my mind but just didn't seem to be where I'd imagined it would be attached.

The brackets were first fitted to the TWU Hawks back in the 80's, so the units could tow gunnery banners for course weapons training.

The towing aircraft would line up with the banner spread out on the tarmac and the cable run out alongside(no winch was fitted), the Hawk would then take of as normal and drag the banner behind it and up into the air. On return to base the banner was dropped on the field, before the aircraft could land.

When 100 Sqn started flying Hawks, their aircraft were drawn from the TWU fleet.

I presume now, the airframes are spread across the Hawk fleet.

A check though books found XX195, XX247, XX248, XX222, XX283, XX325, XX331 have been seen with the fitting.

Shaun.
