Albatros D.V - Revell 1:48

Recommended Posts

I've been casting round for a quick(ish) build for the next few weeks until a review kit arrives that I'm really looking forward to - the GWH Fw 189 if you're interested :yahoo:

Anyway - I thought I'd have a go at a Stringbag - no, not you Chris! A WWI kite... and I chose the Albatros D.V from Revell (a re-pop of the Eduard Weekend Edition), as I liked the decal options, and it didn't seem like it had two much in the way of rigging.

I'm going to need some serious help with this though, as I've never built a biplane before, although I did a few without rigging as a kid, which doesn't really count.

I've started the cockpit, and will need some tips on painting wood effect, and some color references for the pit and the motor would help too. Now... let's get the glue out before I change my mind

Good effort Mike! I've just got the Eduard Weekend edition of the Fokker Eindecker, as I can't quite face a bi-plane yet, although it has got a teensy bit of rigging.

I restored a neighbours Airfix Tiger Moth recently though, and used some White Ensign lycra rigging thread for the rigging. Worked pretty well, and you don't have to worry about angling the rigging holes etc like you do for fishing line.

Good luck with the build, I'm sure you'll be OK.

Thanks for the support Doug :) I've got some invisible mending thread that will do for rigging - it's super-fine, and already a smoke grey color. I might give Bob's Buckles a go actually... Mr Buckley to the white courtesy phone please!

I got some of Bob finest for an upcoming Airfix Hawker Fury, thought they'd all fallen out of the bag when they arrived, but then spotted them nestling in the corner of the bag! Can't imagine how small the 1/72 ones must be!

How's your eyesight?

So have you started yet? Or are we talking about starting? :tease:

That's rich coming from you! :tease: Remember that thread of yours some years back where you got up to two pages with not a picture in sight?

Oh, and I'm almost finished detailing the engine, so :P

now for something completely different... how comes, that the root admin already got one million (!) posts?

Alex

Cos that's the only way you can achieve 10 roundels :wicked: I can change my post count at will - so can the rest of the Mods... tis magick, I tell thee! :hypnotised:

I'll see your wuss & raise you a Gaylord! :tease: Remember - I have your £1.34. It can soon be spent on sweets you know! :fight:

I'm just about to put the primer on the engine, but don't have any clear pics of the (I'm guessing) interruptor gear for the guns, sticking out the back of the engine. There also seems to be a bit of a void behind the motor in front of the bulkhead. Should this be so, or is there something in there that's not provided?

Mike

I'm not one for accuracy or fineness of detail, but I managed to rig a Sopwith Tripe and a Bristol Fighter in 1/72 scale so if I can do it, so can you. Bob's Buckles are great - when they came thru the post I was honestly shocked and never thought I could deal with anything that fine (they're truly microscopic in that scale - I kid you not) but they're surprisingly easy to work with if you're methodical and have a decent set of tweezers.

I'm moving on to a 1/48 Brisfit and am weighing my options - Bob's Buckles, homemade buckles or simply rigged thru holes drilled in the plastic.

How about a WIP?

PS Anyone care to advise on what diameter of fishing line should I use?

This IS a WIP... just not a very picture intensive one yet ;)

Ah sorry - it just looked like a lot of talk about building a model. :sleep_1: I guess that fooled me.

So, have you achieved anything yet? :innocent: Pics or it didn't happen.

Anything in the Windsock datafiles Mike?

Chris.

Ok... the fruits of my labours

The motor isn't exactly large - about 20mm from front to back, so I could only add a few bits to it to make it a little more detailed. I made a new camshaft from rod, some valve springs from fine wire, rebuilt the box on front of the manifold with rod & strip, some filler pipes from brass rod, wired both carburetors and made some HT leads from fine lead wire. Painted up with Lifecolor Panzer Grey and Citadel Mithril Silver and Chainmail.

For scale, that's a cocktail stick I've been using as a handle poking out of the crank case. :)

I've also primed the cockpit and engine bay with Alclad white primer, followed by quite a wet coat of Xtracrylix British Gulf Armour Light Stone as the base for the wood effect (attempt! :frantic: ).

 Sorry Chris - I must have been posting when you posted that. I'll have a look in a sec... I am a dimwit - I'm always forgetting references that I have in my possession :dunce:

Thanks Campbell :)

I painted the prop, seat and did the exhaust later last night - I noticed that the exhaust had a bit of a rough cast texture to it in some pics, so I stippled it with Mr Surfacer 500, then oversprayed with Alclad black primer. A dry-brush with some mid grey to bring out the texture, and it was done. Looks quite good to my eyes :) Pics later.

Now I have to wait for the oil paint to dry on the cockpit interior :sleep_1:

I bit the bullet & ordered the PE Zoom set from Eduard from Hannants... their new ordering system certainly results in quicker delivery ^_^

I wanted the seat belts, dials and cooling jackets for the machine guns really, so I got pretty much what I wanted on the Zoom sheet for a mere few pounds :)

It didn't take too much to finish the pit and get all the belts etc. in place, apart from my usual clumsiness, of course! After it was all installed, I shot a coat of matt varnish on the whole pit to matt down any CA residue peeking out from under the belts. That's as far as I'm going with the cockpit, as there's precious little on view once the fuselage halves are together.

The kit MGs are a little soft, and the jackets not well represented. The Eduard set includes a replacement pair with end caps, so you cut the guns fore and aft of the plastic jackets, re-attach the muzzle/flash-hider to the end cap, and roll up the jackets to the correct diameter. That was a bit tricky, but using various sizes of rod on the annealed metal got me there in the end. I embedded a piece of 1mm brass rod in the receiver, which gave a large contact patch onto which I glued the now cylindrical jacket with the seam pointing downwards. The end-caps went on with no drama, and I reamed out the end of the flash-hiders to make them look a little more realistic. Cocking levers were added from the PE sheet, and the whole assembly has now been put to one side until later in the build.

I'll be gluing up the fuselage halves shortly :)

:nerd: Used to be pretty good 'til I hit 40... then it started to go. Caved in and got a pair of gigs this year :crying:

God.. Me too. Depressing, isn't it?

Am selling off all the 1/72nd biplanes in the stash, as I really like to detail them up, but can't be doing with all that small scale fiddling.

Nice work on the Albatros.

Old age comes to us all Nick... unless we're dead already, so I can live with that ;)

Incidentally - can anyone provide me with some better matches for the wing colors of Otto Kissenberth's V of Jasta 16b June 1917? Revell's color match says Silky Matt Green 360 and Matt Rust 83. I'm looking for some matches in either Xtracrylix or Lifecolor. Tamiya at a push :hmmm:
