JosephLalor
Hi all,Looking for the best match to Giallo Mimetico for Macchis - White Ensign's sold out and Xtracolor doesn't seem to do anything. Do you have any suggestions please? You could probably try Humbrol 26 for 'Giallo Mimetico 4' or 94 with a touch of 154 for 'Giallo Mimetico 3'. maltadefender
Thanks everyone - time to get my measuring jug by the looks!! White Ensign was able to send everything but Giallo, so that's a massive help.

Steven Eisenman
Which Macchi are you doing? 200, 202 or 205? Then again, which company made the aircraft, Macchi or Breda? For a 200 I have used Tamiya Dark Yellow out of the bottle. For a 202, 205 or 200 in the Lizard scheme, then you go to the Nut Brown. But that varied from a dark yellow-brown to a color close to RLM 79. I've mixed one version using Tamiya Flat Earth and Dark Yellow, Edited October 6, 2010 by Steven Eisenman

Super Aereo
Aeronautica Macchi used Giallo Mimetico 4 in the factory for the C.200/202, then Nocciola Chiaro for the 202/205 with the "smoke rings" camouflage - as a rule of thumb.
dahut
Giallo Mimetico - I thought it was some Italian fighter ace... or something best served with a bold Chianti. Give em books to read - and they chew the covers off." Edited October 6, 2010 by dahut

maltadefender
Wow, thanks for all the replies, chaps. Lifecolor looks the best bet although, like white Ensign, Italian colours seem to be out of stock at Airbrushes.com! The models I'm intending to build are: 1/72 MC.200 in 'fried egg' camouflage - Giallo Mimetico No.?? 1/72 MC.202 in 'smoke ring' camouflage - so that's Nocciola Chiaro 1/48 Messerschmitt Bf 109F-4 in Giallo Mimetico No. ??/Oliv-gelb/RLM76, flown by Gunther von Maltzahn in Sicily I knew I should have concentrated on the Eastern Front - much simpler!! Super Aereo
1/72 MC.200 in 'fried egg' camouflage - Giallo Mimetico No.?? - No.4, as used by Macchi withthe "fried egg" pattern. 1/72 MC.202 in 'smoke ring' camouflage - so that's Nocciola Chiaro - Correct 1/48 Messerschmitt Bf 109F-4 in Giallo Mimetico No. ??/Oliv-gelb/RLM76, flown by Gunther von Maltzahn in Sicily - RLM 79 Sandgelb..? Apparently not... it seems that Italian paint was locally-applied over the RLM 74/75/76 Curious - but that's kind of why I want to build it! Steven Eisenman
Yep, as SuperAero says. Mc 200 Giallo 4 Mc 202 Nocciola Chiaro Bf 109 F RLM 79.

The exact color may never be known. I am unable to find a reference on Von Maltzahn's F-4 repainted in Sicily. There is the Aeromaster decal sheet for his aircraft that indicates an "Italian paint", but then speaks of a possible Farbton 78 underside. Why would the underside be 78, if the other German pints were not used? Personally, I don't trust anything Aeromaster says. Assuming it is about mid-1942, then that would be about the same time as stocks of 79 and 80 were reaching the Med. Bf 109s F arriving in the region were already receiving factory applied 79. If it was field applied, than the application could affect the color. If it was an Italian paint, it could have been the Nut Brown, which was introduced in 1941. Giallo 4 is also a possibility, as this is a dark yellow-brown. This is a modeling decision. Edited October 7, 2010 by Steven Eisenman
maltadefender
Thanks Steven. I really like 79 so I'll be happy to paint her in that, I just fancied something a little bit different! Nut brown 202, Giallo 4 200 and sand/olive 109 it is, then! Hmmm... better get some more 79 while I'm at it... there's a Stuka and a Ju88 waiting for some similar treatment erelong.
