Heres a project I have had in mind since Two Bobs released the VF-2 OIF Bounty Hunters. The aim was to produce a copy of this Navy photo taken by PH3 Daniel McLain in Nov 2002 for the Army/Navy football game flypast - source U.S. Navy Website.

Back in early 2007 I recreated the photo in 3D, so I could work out the relative positions between the jets and the camera..

After putting the project off since then, I finally kicked off the builds in July 2010 by building up the stands.

Construction then went very quickly (it should do after building 36 of these so far). The new element to this build was the fact these Tomcats were to built in-flight. The good news is, the gear doors, after removal of the the variuos hinges, fit the openings very well. The only thing I needed to do was fill the wheel wells with Blu-Tac to support the doors.

After Masking off the Canopies, I sprayed Alclad II Black primer, followed by Model Master Enamels in a TPS scheme. After this had cured for a few days, I applied 3 coats of Klear and applied the decals.

One minor note, is that due to where I have glued the magnet in the interior, it is not on the Cats centre of gravity, and after a while the nose starts to fall and point downwards.

I used a combination the old formula Flory Models Dark Grey, Dark Brown and Black washes, for a panel line wash, before sealing it with a further Klear coat and then a final coat of Polly Scale Flat Varnish. The final stages were to dirty up the surfaces using various chalk pastels.

Here are some shots on the bench...

So far, since finishing these Tomcats, I have not been able to replicate the lighting conditions of the photo to my satisfaction, so here is the best one I have taken so far...

Very, very nice!! Looks brilliant with the stands 'removed'!!

Only very minor nitpick I have is that seeing as how you have the RIO's heads turned to the right, I think you should also have done that to the pilot in 104 - he'd have his eyes glued on his leader's jet when flying that close formation!!

Great work though, very cool!!
