Gary West
A bit quiet on here today so a quickie picy of the underside which I sprayed yesterday. Got to keep this one going. Usually WiP threads are the kiss of death for me - I go right off the build in days after starting one.
Gary West
Very much a wise choice - we need MORE toom Mud-shifters! AND Gary.....some Toom's in early Tacticackle Camo schemes often had WHITE Sergeant- Fletcher tanks; Tha knows.......... add a dash of brightness, with Blue Inert 1000lber's........Nice..........!!!! The White tanks just look too clean for my likeing Bill, although both inner and outer hard points will be White. Port side, 2 x SNEB pods, Stbd side - ? Would have been the same, but I've only got one TER so I need to sift through some books for reference material.
jenshb
How about cutting the white with some grey to make a barely subtle off-white? Usually tanks tend to become rather grubby on the bottom side too, so that will take away that clean look, but still remain recognisable as white? Gary West
Wing tanks already done - LAG undersides and weathered Jens
bald eagle
This looks really good Gary,At least you havnt tried to pre-shade every panel line, there are far too many!! Just the main ones will look ok! EXCELLENT WORK...
Gary West
Looking a bit like a burns patient today. Having masked the underside off, I started to roll my Blu tack sausages to mask the top side but the Blu tack just wouldn't stick to the primer - plan B. I decided to use Maskol instead and painted over where the Green will go. Pretty naff pics, but I'm very pleased with the pre shading coming through the Grey - just right. The Maskol did lift some of the Grey edging up, so I'll need to let it dry thoroughly and lightly sand the edges. Should be able to use Blu Tack this time on the Grey to outline ready for the Green. Phil @ Flory Models
It's OK Gary your secret safe with me You have inspired me back to the work room, and seeing you fantastic work on the Phantom has got me started on my 1/72 Fujimi F-4K for the GB
Tango 1
Nice work Gary, I have never tried pre-shading, I might give it a go after seeing this. Looking forward to seeing more.
Gary West
Just when it was starting to come together - BAM! I wont be using Maskol again in a hurry that's for sure. Without understanding the drying properties of Maskol, somehow a good coverage has left sufficient gaps for Green paint to creep into all over the Grey Maybe it was on too thin. Anyway, not the end of the world, just need to take her back to the spray bay again. Then comes Mr Flory's wonder sauce - can't wait to try it out. Skii
Ouch - not a disaster mind, try sanding the green off and then touching up with the airbush, I've had a lot worse happen
Phil @ Flory Models
And there's me thinking it's going to be heavily weathered. No I agree sand back the if it's raised and blow it in you could even darken the colour a bit to look like depot level maintenance. Out of every cock up comes a good idea ( P Flory 2007)
Mike
You know... I remember this happening to me in my previous modelling career. Bad news, eh? I also seem to remember reading somewhere that Maskol contains amonia, which is a solvent for Acrylics... Dunno whether you used them - I suspect not. I understand that Vallejo masking solution is acrylic safe, for acrylics users out there.
Gary West
I gave it a couple of days, and sanded the affected Grey areas down, then re-masked and over sprayed. All that pre shading is no longer visible Sticking the decals on now, after which she'll get a satin varnish finish. I'm going to try one or two interesting (for me) things with some of the panels to try and give it some depth - these shiny birds can look a bit boring all nice n new. Phil @ Flory Models
Looking gooooooooood Gary, Have you done the metal colours yet? I always wonder in what order people paint then. I have panting it first and masking it or doing it after the main paint is on and it looks like you are doing it after decaling, just wondered. Phil @ Flory Models
Also whilst I like of it you could always post shade it. I use Tamiya X-19 smoke it works wonders for post shading and even better on metal finishes.

Thanks Phil - On this occassion I've decided to leave the back end until after decalling/painting - everything is protected by good old Klear so no risk to the decals. The back end will be primed, given a base coat of gun metal, and various tones of Alcad on top. Also whilst I like of it you could always post shade it. I use Tamiya X-19 smoke it works wonders for post shading and even better on metal finishes. I'm going to use your stuff - can't wait to use it either. As long as I can pick out the panel lines, I'll be happy. Can't go too mad because the early Phantoms wore a Gloss finish and didn't weather too badly. AnonymousAA72
A nice recovery Gary! Where did you get the 6 Sqn markings from? The only set that I'm aware of came on a Maintrack sheet that you place on th emodel and then soak!!!?!?!?

The only set that I'm aware of came on a Maintrack sheet that you place on th emodel and then soak!!!?!?!? Yep Maintrack - the Gunners strip on the tail is from that sheet although when I cut out the can opener badge for the nose, it became clear it was about 30% larger than it should have been. So I dipped into a Xtradecal Jaguar sheet for that one. Luckily XV495 (serials covered off in the Hasegawa kit) also served with 6 sqn.
Nev
Gary, that is looking sooooo sweeeet! Like you said, these glossy birds didn't weather much, so I'll be interested to see how your ideas turn out
