Hi Jason I was thinking about that but I already have the single seater in the stash waiting for it's turn.

That'll work, Den. Those single-seaters especially needed the escort protection. I hope you do a thread of your Shturmovik when you start it. I've almost finished mine.

Jason

Well I'm actually getting excited about this one again as it is all coming together at last, all markings finished (apart from the wing fuel guages).

It's time to look at the detail parts now, the spinner is red white and blue and as I'm also building two French fighters I researched the correct paint for this, however I forgot that it was probably unlikely that the VVS had stocks of French paint ! Never mind it's only the blue that is probably wrong. When I came to paint the spinner I initially painted it all white then tried to mask off for the blue and red, this did not work.

It quickly became apparent (I should know this) that spinners can only be masked with tape one way, tip to base, so it was resprayed all blue (Humbrol 87) masked then the white (Xtracolor X141) and then the red (Xtracolor x14).

On a roll now and on with the varnish, I decided to use a satin finish for this one and airbrushed a mixture of Xracolor Satin varnish and thinners (2:1), this had a pretty amazing effect (well amazing to me !), it evened everything out, but it also seemed to bring the two greys closer together, I'm most impressed.

And the completed spinner, not perfect but all right for me.

And bang up to date now, here are the detail parts, I meant to post this earlier as you can tell by the incomplete spinner.

Here are the main gear legs, the scissors are from an Eduard set designed for the Me262, for some reason I had two sets of these, so they each donated a nosewheel scissor link to the Yak.

I also found the clear sheet to make up the rear armoured cockpit glass, I will try and fit that as well.

Brilliant work, Den! Very nice indeed. I've been thinking, as you have, that Testors Light Ghost Gray is probably too light for the AMT-11 Blue-Grey, but to be honest, it looks very nice here. This appears like what I expect the two-grey scheme to look like, not a low-contrast mix of two dark greys.

Jason

Hi Jason, I must admit that I did think that the LGG was a bit light but the satin varnish did the trick, unfortunately it is doubtful wether I will use the same scheme again as there are no suitable 1/32 scale kits that I could use it on !

Yes, Den, pity about that. I won't go on my usual rant about the paucity of large scale VVS aircraft. I do wish that the IL-2's had been painted in the two-grey scheme, as they supposedly were directed to do from 1944 onwards. It would appear however that this was never done. Another pity - I think an arrow in the two-grey scheme would look brilliant!

Thanks guys, it's nearly there now just a few bits and bobs to do.

Looking forward to the piccies when you get it done, Den! By the by, I just finished my Hobby Boss wheeled single-seater IL-2 Shturmovik. It took me ten months of work, but I think it was worth it. Sorry I can't show any photographs at the moment, as I'm waiting to hear back from a magazine I sent the build article to. I hope they go for it; still and all, it was worth it. Hopefully you'll feel the same way about your Yak - you certainly won't have much competition in the 1/32nd scale GPW Fighter category at your local hobby show!

Regards,

Jason

Hi Jason,

I will look forward to seeing your IL-2 and pick up some pointers ! As for the Yak I'm made up with it, but it will be nice to see it finished.

Well finished it today and I am really pleased with it, it is not perfect but I like it, this means that I can get on with the French fighters that have been patiently waiting on the shelf !

Brilliant work, Den! It is indeed gratifying to see such a nice 1/32nd scale VVS aeroplane. It really would look smashing next to an IL-2, but wait for the arrow (swept-wing) version to come out. That way they'll be in the proper time period (1944 on). I also have to add that whether the Testors Light Ghost Gray is technically too light or not, it looks great with the dark grey.

Jason

Thank you for the nice words, and yes it would like nice in company with an IL-2, but I've got a Bloch 152 and a Hawk 75 to finish first, then I think it may be a Soviet P-39.

I look forward to the Soviet P-39, Den! Hmmm, I thought I joined this site to get reacquainted with British aircraft, yet I still seem to be obsessed with Soviet 'planes. Oh well, I guess a leopard can't change his spots.

Hi Jason just build whatever makes you happy, I have just come from an Italian phase my last 3 builds were Italian WW2 aircraft, the Yak-3 was an oddball choice but it's certainly got me on a Soviet kick now.

Cheers
