Spitfire Mk1A

R6626 603 Squadron RAF Hornchurch August 1940

Flt. Off. 'Ras' Berry

On the 31st of August 1940 Flt. Off. 'Ras' Berry took off from RAF Hornchurch at just before 18:00 to intercept an incoming raid. The pilots of 603 Squadron intercepted the Messerschmitt escorts of I/JG3 over South London. In a confused, running dogfight Flt. Off.Berry caught and shot down the Messerscmitt Bf109 flown by Oblt. Helmut Rau at 18:45. The Messerscmitt crash landed on the beach at Shoeburyness where the pilot was taken prisoner unhurt.

Airfix Mk1 Hawker Hurricane of 32 Squadron.

Kit is Airfix 1/48 scale, added some mesh to the radiator grille and a support bar, cut and repositioned the undercarriage to simulate it taking off.

Brass prop shaft and and tube fitted to get it to spin freely.

White Ensign enamels used for camo, Humbrol Eggshell 97 for the underneath.

First time I've built this kit, and must say I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Heinkel He111H-2

A1+BT (Werk Nummer 3340), 9./KG53 Lille-Nord, France, September 1940

On 15th September 1940 a series of large-scale attacks was mounted by the Luftwaffe against London. A1+BT, presumably with its fellow 9th staffel aircraft, was part of this aerial armada. At some point during the battle, A1+BT was intercepted by RAF Spitfires of 66 Sqn and suffered battle damage. It was not immediately catastrophic however, and the aircraft manged to limp home to France, crash landing near the small French village of Armentières . Two of the Heinkel's crew were wounded during the events of that day.

*Kit Manufacturer: Revell He111H-6 (04377) (Hasegawa tooling)

*Scale: 1/72

*Extras used: Xtradecal Battle of Britain 70th Anniversary sheet (X72-118), Eduard He111 paintmasks

*Paints and colours used: Xtracrylix for majority of colours, also some Tamiya and Citadel acrylics for detail/weathering.

*Other Info: Full build thread HERE.
