I open the box as soon as I get home, read the instructions, and check out the decals, but rarely open the poly bags until I'm ready to build.

I usually do the same, check out whats in the box, check the detail and sprues though the bags. Have a quick glance at the decals (can they be used, correct colours, print quility, ETC) and then put down.

I then normally return a few hours later for another look and try to decide what to do with the kit, leave near the workbench? or place in the maybe up to the loft pile?

If its a great kit, its bags off and lets check the fit and get some glue!

Shaun.

I always check ASAP even if not going to build for a long time

Recently bought a kit that had a badly twisted distorted unusable fuselage half so was able to get a replace form the manufacturer in days.

Maybe not possible to get a part like that in a few years :hmmm:

Certainly open the box, usually in the car on the way home. If it's a complicated kit, more often than not leave the bags sealed for fear of losing any small parts, check over the instructions, and transfers definitely.

Open, gaze, peruse, touch, fondle, plan the build, choose an option, see what after Market stuff I've got and pop that in the box. Test fit some of the big bits, then put it in the cupboard with the rest of my stash and don't touch it again...  Buy new kit then start the process again!!

I am like a kid at christmas everytime i get a kit. I open it and look at it, i don't open the bags but i like to look them over. At the moment the 2 kits in the stash that i keep opening and looking at is the airfix 1/72 Sea harrier FRS-1 (new tool) and the Nimrod. I suppose that i have to build one when i finish my current build.

Always open the box at home, but not always open the inner bags.

I like to check out the quality of the detail, panel lines etc.

Have a peruse through the destructions and start formulating a plan of attack.

Check to see if the decals are useable and then (usually) box it back up and into the evergrowing stash. :)

Leaving the box intact is something that never crosse my mind ! Most times I open the kit as soon as I'm back in the car, the other times I open it before getting back to the car ! A look at the sprues, one at the decal sheet, one at the instructions.. there's a whole range of emotions involved in opening the box of a kit !

Open, grope, drool...but I refrain from opening the inner bags if the kit is so packed,

usually all done as soon as I get back to the car.

Have even been late for work a couple of times, all for the sake of a quick

rummage after collecting stuff from the post office :wicked: :wicked:

Open the shrink wrap, open the bags, snip the major parts off the sprue, tape them together, fondle plastic, make airplane noises, view from every possible angle, imagine alternative decals and/or resin parts to come, remove tape, put pieces back in box, put box on shelf for "some day" :)

Hi All,

Well it seems it was a successful poll..glad I am not alone...

Todays impulse buy .... ( 40% off any item voucher for michaels store, my excuse..) ..... was a 1:48 revell P-39, it made to the front door, then the wrapping came off, seems a nice re issue kit by the look of it, all parts present, now re-bagged, and ready for storage until the bad weather,it even came with some free extra stuff, ( pilot & mechanic, underwing guns )

Cheers

Hi

My first ever poll anywhere so hope it works.

So what do you personally do when you buy a new or old model.

open the box or leave it sealed

I suppose it is inspired by all those old model kits for sale on e bay still with the original seals/shrinkwrap.

cheers

Jerry

Open it, of course, and as quickly as is safely possible. (i.e., not while driving the car!) Even us colonial philistines know that much.... I mean, Enquiring minds want to know, right?

OK, I do have a couple of models still in shrinkwrap, but they are all additional copies of kits that I already own, and have open copies to inspect, when I feel the urge. The total number can be counted on the fingers of one hand...

At a guess, a lot of those models were probably gifts to a child who a) had or was about to outgrow modeling or B) got a model that he/she really didn't want in the first place, or c) the parents forgot to give the gift, and it stayed hidden for years.

Also, a shocking number of 'original shrinkwrap' kits were issued prior to the widespread use of shrinkwrap. Some kits are most likely shrinkwrapped simply to make the 'unopened' claim, while still others represent shelf stock on hand for years, and at some later point the store sealed the kits in shrinkwrap. Hard to tell.
