1/48 Tamiya Austin Tilly

Recommended Posts

Thought I post a few pics of the Austin Tilly I've been building when I needed a break from my Beaufighter build. Constructive criticism welcome.

And finally one of the two together.

Nice work Jase....The Tilly's especially good bearing in mind the small size of the kit (you don't get much for your money thank you Tamiya....)

A lovely build but strictly speaking its the wrong colour! you have obviously followed tamiya's incorrect painting guide.

Allover RAF blue was a pre war scheme and used at the very start of the war. Tillys did not come into service until after the war started so would have been painted in the standard camoflage Brown(s), or british olive drab/disruptive basic scheme from 1944. The roundel did not come into use as a marking until 1943.

RAF blue returned in 1947/8 but with black wings andthe new no plate system but i dont know if tillys survived in service to then.

Thanks for the info selwyn. It's weird, I never assume a kit manufacturer has got the colours of an aircraft I'm building correct and I always research the particular aircraft I'm building, but the thought never crossed my mind to check the Tilly colours. Doh!

Lovely build indeed, agree with the colour comment, but Tamiya have also made an error in that the RAF did not use the Austin, they mostly used Hillmans or Standards.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone.

DCRanger, the collector rings on the Beau are Alclad Burnt Iron over Alclad Aluminium.

As I understand it they based the scheme on a contemporary restoration that is incorrectly finished, Tamiya have had a lot of help from Mike Shackleton of the Tilly Register on the 1/35th kit, I don't know if he offered any help on the 1/48th one but they haven't made the same mistake in the larger scale.

Accurate Armour make a lovely Standard Tilly in 1/48th, all resin and not cheap but not that badly priced considering the Tamiya kit was 15 quid when it was released, probably nearer 18 by now!

They both look wonderful, even if the colouring's not quite the ticket. Great work!
