Guest Drewe
Special Hobby kit started yesterday. Nice and up with the best of SH these days. Fuselage built and sanding commenced. Some small filling jobs but a dab of CA with some Talc mixed in has dealt with them. The forward cannon troughs are partly on the nose piece requiring some eaking out to maintain continuity (heh. . continuity, there's a word to send shivers down the spine of the bobbies amongst us!). In the past I'd have used rat tail files, knife blades, rolled up wet&dry, basically anything. Now it took about five seconds a side with the mission models rounded micro-chisel! I can't recommend this little tool enough. It's not something I use constantly, but when I do use it nothing else comes close to doing the job required. The lower wing is one piece with upper panels to be added. Sadly SH have boobed here. The wing in the kit is an extended (overextended in fact - they are too long!), slatted non 6-3 affair. The F-86K had a slatted, 6-3 extended F-40 wing. So I seperated the wing lowers from the centre section and added the centre section to the fuselage assembly. The wings you see here are from the Fujimi F-86 F-40 kit. An easy mod and minimal work except for extending the fairing at the leading edge where it meets the fuselage. Sliver of milliput will see that right. This might appear an expensive way to get this result, but really it's not that bad. The Fujimi F-86 can be picked up for about £4 a pop from Rainbow-10 in Japan, so it's a cheap source for the correct wing. Besides, I may be able to use the non-6-3 slatted SH wing, reduced at the tips, on the modified Fujimi F fuselage on my way to the F-86A I covet! Now playing - Black Sabbath, The Dio Years. Dave
Nice start Drewe. I think my Sabre is inching it's way to the top of the stash. Children of the Sea perchance?
Guest Drewe
Children of the Sea perchance? Right now? Turn Up The Night. . . Bang that head that does not bang! (especially for an olympic class air-drummer like me!)
Guest Cop
Like the kit. Hate the word continuity. It ranks along side with my all time most hated word. Community. Nige.
Oliver
Looking good Drewe. Though my bank manager hates you as everytime you build something i like i have to go out and buy that kit!!!!
Guest Drewe
Wings added and blending them in underway. Multiple applications of suprglue and sanding, followed by priming and more sanding. Detail rescribed with a pin in a needle vice, and a wash of oil paint to check the detail, and you can see some minor touch up with more Tamiya primer prior to final sanding. Upper side, actually fitted pretty well, super thin CA along to top join (from inside the wheel wells!), couple applications of Tamiya primer and excess removed with a cotton bud and mr color thinner. Some light sanding around the front end but not much to bring it all together.

Andrew
Hi Drewe, Nice progress on the Sabre; what markings do you have planned for it? Is the difference in chord between the two wings very noticeable? Perhaps I should just go and find Gene's firstlook on ARC.... This kit and the F-86H have recently turned up in my LHS for surprisingly reasonable prices. That sort of thing plus your build make it difficult not to follow in Oliver's footsteps..... "yes, I think I do need an F-86K to go with my F-86D, and seeing there's an F-86H as well......" Now, to find out what the F-86K was and how it differed from other SabreDogs, and who flew it (please be Luftwaffe, please be Luftwaffe..). Good luck with the rest of the build. Cheers, Andrew. coneheadff
Now, to find out what the F-86K was and how it differed from other SabreDogs, and who flew it (please be Luftwaffe, please be Luftwaffe..). I would love to build one but there is only one conversion in 48...and it's sold out right now http://www.aviationmegastore.com/?shopid=L...0&art=48809 But even if I had one now I couldn't finish it yet...but at least I would know that I have it The pic was made last year at the GAF museum at former RAF station Gatow. The a/c is in a bad shape. As most of them are in Gatow. Can't await to see the model finished, Drewe! Cheers, Alex P.S. Anyone interessted to see more pictures from Gatow? Thanks also to Alex for your help. I'm off to your thread now...... Cheers.

Guest Drewe
Been quite slow progress on this one, but finally got the initial coat of paint on tonight. Gunze Mr Color H8 silver is my basecoat of choice for metal these days. It doesn't need a primer like alclad, it is exceedingly fine grained (like Alclad), very sturdy and takes masking as well as any normal Mr Color paint, and you can spray Alclad straight over it if you like without crazing or wrinkling the finish (In fact Mr Color paint is a good primer for Alclad full stop), but the best bit for me is that it behaves like a normal paint, and not like some thoroughbred temperamental metal finish, it even fills some minor scratches that those finishes would throw into sharp relief! Next stop is to pick out panels using a mix of tinted Mr Color silver, Alclads and the like, prior to detail painting.
Andrew
Hi Drewe, Great progress on your F-86K. Thanks for the heads-up on Gunze H8; sounds like a bloody handy colour to have in the collection. I'm looking forward to how your tints of this base turn out and further explanation/guidance as you go would be very much appreciated. Cheers, Andrew
Guest Drewe
Panels picked out in various mixes of paint and then deatil painting done. Washed with Phil Flory's new dark modelling wash (thought. . am I the first on here to show it being used?). . . seems like good stuff to me! Then started adding decals. As you can see it's going to be an AMI aircraft. Tell you what, as soon as you put some Italian roundels on a Sabre Dog the G-91's lineage becomes startlingly clear! periklis_sale
Looks fab mate!!!!! How did you put the decals and there is no silvering?
Andrew
More great progress Drewe, Really looks the business with tones, detail, wash and now decals. Quite the inspiration, but I'm a bit concerned that mine (who said I bought one? It wasn't me, youse can't prove nuffin....) might have to wait while I finish (who's sayin' I started ennyfin? I'm not sayin' nuffin) one or two other little projects. Still, gives me a chance to locate some German markings, if such things exist (who's sayin' I do research?). Thanks for your pics, Andrew (apparently with something to hide....)
