  • 2 weeks later...

Bit of an update - not done too much - mainly tidying bits up....

managed to add the anti-glare panel

IMG_4890.jpg

And then masked off the LACG and black areas..

IMG_4893.jpg

Ready for an undercoat of matt white....Revell Aqua, to highlight any further problems...After tidying up, I'll add another coat or two of white - this will act as The undercoat for the "real" white and Signal Red

IMG_4898.jpg

You may note that I've added plastic card RAT doors in front of the fin. I'd managed to screw up the original scribing to such an extent that I felt that drilling the offending plastic out and adding the doors from scratch would be the better option ..

You can also see the PE grills just infront of these doors. I will remove these - as they don't impress me too much!!!

White OVER black - you're a brave man!!

It actually worked rather well!! I used Revell Aqua last night, Citadels Skull White tonight, and will finish off with Xtracrylic tomorrow!!

On my Jaguar T2 build I managed to cover the pre-shading under a few coats of white! So thought it may do so!!

I've spent the last week or so, on and off, getting the white on, building up a couple of layers an evening. I've been experimenting , to a certain extent, and have used the following Acrylic's...first off was Citadel's Skull White. This is good stuff and covers really well. BUT I thought I'd try on top of that Revell Aqua White. Again this coveres well too. The aim was to get a good coat of white on - to act as the upper fuselage surfaces - obviously, but also to give a good base for the Signal Red.

I should have left well alone, but I then gave the model a few thin coats of Xtracrylic White. The aim being to give a nice glossy sheen. Well this was okay, but I thought I'd give the model a gentle buffing up with a rag - to remove any speckles of dust. It polished up okay BUT left yellowish patches! Some of the white - all acrylic had yellowed!! Not sure which one but I suspect that the Xtracrylic must have reacted with something else.

So a gentle cleaning up with incedibly fine wetn'dry, and tonight I gave the kit a few coats of.............TAMIYA matt white!!!

Here's some pic's of the painting progress over the last week or so...

Building the white up..

And here we have the masking tape off of the anti-glare panel - white over black worked!

Signal red on.....go!!!!!

...but Prior to loading red into the airbrush...... I just wasn't happy with the white. After applying a good coat of Citadel Chaos White, the surface renained "tacky" even after 24 hours! I think it might have reacted to the mix of Xtracylic thinners and Winsdor and Newtons Acrylic retarder- perhaps I overdid it on the latter? Anyway, I gently cleaned the top coat off - with sioapy water and when dry returned to Xtracylic's White - it sprayed on a treat.

Then on to the red....I gave the model a good few coats of Citadel's blood red - an excellent match for Signal Red - but a bit matt - so to finish off I gave a few light coats of Xtracylic's Signal (Red Arrows) Red.

And here she sit's!! A bit of tidying up tp do....an "oo" paintbrush will work wonders here! There seems to be a stain on the anti-glare panel - this must have happened when I was cleaning the white off - probably seeping under the tamiya tape. I may need to re-spray that.

Generally though, I'm quite pleased with the paint job! Maybe the lay-off has done me some good!!

Oh! And Xytracylic rules!!

I hope to get a few coats of Kleer on tomorrow night - after dealing with the flaws in the paintwork, then decals on over the next few days.

Still some way to go - I've built up one set of flaps, and will scratch-build the main gears wheel doors - easier than correcting those in the kit.

I've also noticed that I've managed to break one of the wing fences. So that will need replacing.

Wheel wells need detailling, then the main legs on

Stall strips, seats, canopy, antennae, pitot........

Just caught this thread - awesome build! A question if I may? I have the Airfix kit in deep store to build one day and have noted comments in the past about the kit intakes. Apart from the lack of depth inside what is wrong with this area of the kit? Does it matter if intake covers are fabricated?

Keep up the excellent work

Cheers Trevor, regarding the kit intakes, they're abit too square at the top and have no real "innards". The 2M set are great assets and correct the shape issues. Intake covers would indeed cover the kits deficiencies. In fact I think I may have used that trick on one of my earlier Hawk builds?

I have started decalling and hope to have completed that over the next night or so, more pic's then.....

With the main colours on , I could start work on the decals....after correcting the flaws in the paint work - I gave the model a few good coats of Johnson's Kleer. This gave a nice hard shiny and protective (from the handling perspective) finish ready for decals.

IMG_4963.jpg

Here's a batch of decal's, some of which will be used on this project.

IMG_4966.jpg

And here's a couple of pic's showing the decal work thus so far. Still a few decals - mostly stencils to add. You may note that the roundels didn't go over the wing vortex generators that well - so that will require another paint jobby . Looking at photo's of XX163 ca 1981, it appears that this aircraft had the cream coloured fin leading edge protection added, so I'll need to add that as well.

Next job - once the declas have been done..... Undercarriage and flaps.....

Many thanks to y'all for your kindly words........

Here's what I've been up to lately.....

Thought it about time I got her up on all three wheels, so I set about doing just that! I used the kits undercarriage units....I think they're reasonably accurate - but I added a brake pipe from copper wire...thats enough detailling for me!!!

IMG_4999.jpg

I also cobbled together both sets of flaps

IMG_5005.jpg

Here's the undercarriage uits painted and washed with one of Phil's Flory washes - lovely stuff!!

IMG_5016.jpg

And here she is on all three...she's getting there!! I've added the seats - though not glued in - still need a bit more paint I think.......
