Trumpeter 1/32 P-38

I've been lurking for some time but thought I'd post my first WIP. The plan is to build this kit pretty much out of the box, just replace those icky vinyl tires. So far I've put together the two Allisons. I spent a bit more time painting up the first engine only to read that they are mostly invisible once installed.

First one;

Second engine;

I've been playing around with artists oils, as washes, dry brushed and thinned with lacquer thinners sprayed on as tints. Not too sure if I've got a handle on quite how they work but having fun none the less.

Following the instructions I'm just about to start work on the wheel wells. I might add a few lines with lead wire but so far everything is going together very well.

Thanks for stopping in for a look.

Morning Dan and :post1:

That is beautiful work on the engine so far and looking forward to seeing the rest! The effect that you've achieved is so subtle and lifelike, a great job! So, what's the secret??!!

Thank you all for such a cordial welcome. I'm glad you like my little efforts. I've been working on the main gear bays. Everything fits nice and snug but I couldn't leave well enough alone. Just had to add some bits and bobs to the well top. After looking at the reference again I think I got the runs a bit back to front but I'm going to have to live with it. Besides, now I get to do the fun part... painting :)

Busdriver--Thank you. No secret, I usually block out all my colours with either Tamiya or Lifecolor acrylics. Then wash with oil paints thinned with turps and lighter fluid. After that its a dry brush with lighter mixes of oil paints. All topped off with a very thin tint of oils thinned with lacquer thinners sprayed with an airbrush. Lots of steps but I do love to paint.

Hey Kev,

Metro Hobbies, Station Street and Canterbury Road Box Hill. They now have pretty much the whole range on offer. Three or four big displays. And being the paint fiend that I am I'm slowly getting a few each week as I drive right past them on the way to work. I haven had too much of a play with them I'm still seeing what works best to thin then, only using Windex right now. I haven't tried lacquer thinner yet like I use for my Tamiyas. They do seem to have good covering properties and dry dead flat. Lots of trick colours though ;)

Hope that helps.

Dan

Thanks Dan. Metro Hobbies is a bit out of my way, but I have noticed them on eBay occasionally. I'll have to give them a go.

Kev

They are seriously good paints Kev - Have a look at my review here. I realise you're upside down, but the UK importer is http://www.airbrushes.com :)

Thanks for the link Mike. Good review, and they do indeed sound like good paints. I was taken by the fact that they have an RAAF set! I'll get me one of those for my 2 Boomerang kits if I can.

Kev

are lifecolor enamel or acryllic? Will need some new paints when I start the F?A-18 that is gathering dust - am used to enamels so guess I should stick to what I know (unless i get acryllic and a cheap model to practice on)

Roughing in the paint. I'll get to the details tomorrow night. Main colour is Lifecolor UA134 Zinc Chrome thinned with more Windex over bare plastic. Though I think I will follow Mikes great Lifecolor review and prime my bits before I shoot Lifecolor colour coats in the future. Thanks for the review Mike!

robw_uk -- Lifecolor are acrylics. Give them a try they are nice paints to work with and have heaps of premixed colours. I'm still most comfortable with Tamiya acrylics, mainly as I have the most experience with them, but I'm getting really tired of having to mix every colour I want.

denstore -- Thank you. So far this kit has built like a dream. I'd buy another in a second.

Thanks for looking in.

cheers Dan... may get some for a test build before hitting the F/A-18 (its only 1/72 but want to add a bit of AM/mods to make it my best yet)....

Not much added, too much real life in the way. I plumped for the Scale Aircraft Conversions metal landing gear. They seem a touch soft but hopefully will add a bit of support to the bird once she's finished. I'm planing on using rare earth magnets and with iron bits hidden in some resin wheels to keep her nose down rather than add a ton of weight to the nose, even so, the finished kit will weight a fair bit . We'll see just how well that works out...

Gear painted and installed;

I've been fiddling with the other main wheel well and thinning out openings and grills in some of the other parts. Progress but nothing much to show for it. I did get the Verlinden cockpit 'improvements' set. I don't think I'll bother with using much of it as it's pretty basic stuff, I 'm just glad I picked it up cheap on ebay.

Thanks for stopping in for a look.
