wel chapps what can i say

RAF Bae Systems Hawk T1a 50 years of 4FTS Anniversary Scheme 2010

100_2604.jpg

ok whats in the box

you get:

1. the normal Airfix red arrows tooling (new one)

2. resin ejector seats

3. instruction book

4. paper mask sheet

5. decal instructions and decal sheet

the kit

well what can is say about it, there are many reviews of this kit, and it is the normal airfix kit

100_2608.jpg

100_2607.jpg

the Seats

these are criply molded and are very well detailed, i beliieve these are also avaliable direct from MA

100_2610.jpg

the instructions

this is the airfix instructions formed nicley into a tidy booklet, it has corrections form the airfix kit and includeds the modifications required to install the seats and additions for ariels ect, it als o includes some good reference photos, although small and ejector seat photos

100_2611.jpg

100_2612.jpg

100_2613.jpg

100_2614.jpg

100_2615.jpg

the paper mask

the paper mask is basically a copy of the decals sheet, so you can cut out the white pieces of the decals im unsure at the time of how this would help all that masking

100_2616.jpg

the decals

these look good, thin and in perfect register and for once there are stencils for the 'data', the instruction booklet is to the normal standard for MA, clear diagrams for masking and decasl placement and colour call outs

100_2621.jpg

100_2617.jpg

100_2619.jpg

100_2618.jpg

100_2620.jpg

in conclusion

over all this is a nice package with a good kit to base it on, the seats look good but at this scale i doubt if its worth the time and the effort as they wont been seen, the main problem is going to be masking the kit to apply the paint, (colour call outs in hunbrol and xtracolour) i cant wait to build this kit, but as for value for money, well i dont think it is, a airfix hawk can be bought for as little as a fiver and you dont really need the seats, so £18 seams a lot, in hind site id just buy the decasl sheet

MMM

£18.00 does seem a little high,

but saying that compared to some 72nd kits its not bad.

just wondering if they would do it in 48th.

now theres a thought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good pics Mark :)

Well as I said I am still unsure about parting with £18 for it, not saying that I wouldn't if the thing was sat in front of me, but when I do the standard kit I am not bothered about the seats at all, so if there was a version minus those for around £12-13 then I wouldn't think twice :)

Do my eyes see they reccommend Humbrol 25 for the blue? I have the Xtracolor blue but it just looks dark to me..

Looking forward to all that masking! Maybe it will be less tedious on the Revell 32 later?

well would it work then if you sprayed a base coat of white overall, then put the paper masks on, painted the red blue and black, then applied the white decals? That may guarantee opacity :)

yep thats the way to go, especially with the red, it needs a white undercoat anyway, its going to be hard work, and i think you need to leave all the bits off, and i mean all of them!

the instructions surgest to paint the whole airframe black first then red then blue, but im not convinced by this as the white decals will show any imperfections badly, infact if its masked well, you may not need the white decals?

Hi Guys

My kit dropped through the door this morning, and it looks very complicated to mask up the white, but we'll see when it comes to it.

With ref to the Roundel Blue, i used the Humbrol 25 enamel on the all blue Hawk i built and is in my 2010 builds thread. I thought it looked too dark at first, but when comparing to the decals it seems fine.

i think thats the right decision to make, dont get me wrong she will look good, if i dont F**k it up but £18 is a lot, basically the seats you dont need so thats £13 for one set of decals, plus p&p

Plus i dont trust myself to do that scheme justice on a 72 should be fairly straight forward on the 32

I wonder if another British decal manufacturer might issue their own sheet in 1/72.

Robert

I expect so, maybe Xtradecal will give it a go.. I wonder if they'd go for decals with the red and blue already printed on them too? Could be interesting..

Also, I wondered if the likes of Hasegawa made a Hawk.. a) what their price for it would be.. (around £10 I expect).. and B) how many releases they would get off the same kit with all these special schemes.. if you think what they have done to the likes of Mustangs and F-16s.. and would they hitch up the price to the £16 mark for the privilege? But, again, if we said £6 for an Airfix Hawk, and maybe the same for a decal sheet, that's still £12, so not too bad in the end..

goin by some of the MA decals (i.e. the st athan dragon) i hope xtradecal does a sheet, the MA decasl have been, what shall we say, not their finest. if hase did the hwak it would sell like hot cakes, even at £16 espexially if they covers some of the rare odd sceemes, like the black one with yellow fire nose

Just curious....Why are the paper masks included with this kit? Is the expectation that these will be used over a white base coat so that one does not need the white decals? Or are they required when using the white decals to mask of the white undercoat so that the white decals will not show bleed through?

Are there any recomendations on how to stick on the paper masks if they are used? With all the fine lines, this seems a bit tricky. I have this these kit on order as I am a sucker for cool, special schemes!

Have fun modeling!

Mike

i have no idea why they put these in they are a thin card, the painting instructions recomend painting alover black first then red then blue, which i think will be a mistake, i recon white then mask the areas then red then blue and finaly black, im goingto photocopy the masking card and cut out the paper then use the template to cut tape and mask the white with that

If I get one I might use the card templates to put over some large Tamiya tape and then use that for masking.. after a base coat of gloss white anyway. I'll just have to get one and experiment :)
