moebius Iron Man mk2 (silver suit)

Recommended Posts

well thanks to a kind poster on here i picked up a bargin from play.com

my son jamies loves iron man so i thought id make it for him, ive studied Andy Mullens thread closely and thanks to him i now will add power (thanks andy)

anyway here goes, the kit is crisply molded and fits like a dream with only minor filling and sanding needed on the seams

box shot!

100_2542.jpg

the plastic is all clear with most (bar the base) being covered in silver paint which does flake easily but doesnt matter as a repaint will be needed anyway

100_2544.jpg

100_2545.jpg

there is also a small decal sheet which contain rivits

100_2543.jpg

i was so keen to get going ive had the dremel and soldering iron out and build up the arms and powered them up!!!

That looks like it will be a stunning model when built. A good example of a model to use different shades of Alclad.

The eves look like they have a slight blue tinge.

good picture but i dont think thats the mk2 suit,

If you have some spare white LEDs, just tint them with blue clear like I did with mine

thats brilliant!!!!! i would have never thought of that!!!!!, ive already been on the net looking at going to maplins in the morning but now i dont have to thanks mate

but ive filled and sanded, an arm, it looks odd as its clear plastic with silver overpainted so when you sand off comes the silver

Looking good! ...if you're going to repaint it all anyway, you might want to take off the silver plating wholesale - it's not a great surface for painting onto so the paint gets a good grip. If you get some "caustic soda" from your local hardware/cleaning shop (the brand I have is called "Max Strength") and mix it up - very carefully - in a bucket, and dump the sprues in it'll dissolve the aluminium "silver" plate off in seconds, and leave you nice bare plastic for painting. You might also want to spray the _inside_ silver before assembly to prevent light leaking through where you don't want it!...

HTH,

bestest,

M.

thanks not a bad idea, only problem is ive glued and wired a lot of it, but the paint comes off easy so ill just lightly sand it before i prime with black and alclad it, i will paint the insides of what i can especially round the lights

ok chaps i need your help, how do i remove the paint from the circle on the chest plate (i.e. where the light is) as the kit is made from clear plastic i was going to ilumiate this and not start cutting, and i dont want to scratch it id rather leave the rest of the paint on for the time being but if i have to i will dip the lot in to some chemical or another (if thats what i have to do what shall i use? hopfully somthing household)

I would sand off the paint and then polish the clear plastic with Micromesh, and then mask the round until painting finished.

I actually drilled and removed all of the holes on my red one, and replaced them with thin white plasticard. The insides of where the LEDs are to be place need to be painted to stop light leakage. I used two coats of black on mine.

thanks andy, i thought id use the clear plastic as it was there, yours was red wasnt it? its just an awkward shape its recessed and difficult to sand without damaging the surrounding area, i cant paint the hands black as ive sealed that bit up (nevermind) but the rest will be blacked out, also mate how did you cut the eyes out so neatly?

I wouldn't worry too much about getting the plastic completely transparent again. It looks to me from that photo like you want the whole circle to glow evenly, so a "frosted" look would diffuse the light better anyway. If it's actually recessed, then you could try making up some strong caustic soda as I suggested, but just drop it in with a cheap brush (that you don't care about) to fill the recess. Once it's eaten the plating, flush it out quickly with a lot of cold water, and it should just take the plate off in situ...

Otherwise, mask around the hole with SEVERAL layers of tape and spray it with some Halfords lacquer - from painful experience I know that THAT wrinkles and lifts "chrome" plating! ;-P

best regards,

Matt

Drilled with micro drills and then a few days of careful filing with flat needle file.

thanks chapps

well i tried somthing off the wall, i scratched around the edges of the circle with a sharpe blade, the placed some hitac tape on the circle pushed it down firmly and pulled it off quick

here's the result, your right its slightly frosed but i wanted to do that on the inside, was also toying withthe idea of giving it a light tint, of thinned blue around the edges

hears the progress withthe head also
