HMS Tiger Matchbox 1/700

When the Falklands War broke out in late March 1982, both ships were rapidly surveyed and it was determined both were in good enough material shape that both were drydocked (Tiger in Portsmouth and Blake at Chatham) and recommissioning work was begun, as it was deemed that their 6" guns would be useful for shore bombardment. By late-May it was realized that neither could be made ready in time for deployment and work was stopped. Though Chile showed a faint interest in acquiring Tiger (and sister-ship Blake), this did not get past the discussion stage, and Tiger lingered on tied to a mooring buoy in Portsmouth Harbour. Tiger existed in a slowly deteriorating condition until mid-1986, when she was sold for scrap. She was towed to Spain and scrapping started in October 1986 " found this today".so they nearly went .

Very nice whiff, like the exocets and CIWS!

And we really could have done with some big guns both then and now. The littoral warfare concept seems to demand it in these days of uncertainty.

:thumbsup2:

What a great job on this model of HMS Tiger ! It would have been very interesting had they somehow gotten this re-commissioned.

Hmmm, and come to think of it, wouldn't it have been fantastic if they could have somehow been able to have taken a look at a still-preserved "splendid cat" museum ship HMS Tiger for use of her 13.5 inch main battery during the conflict !

Falklands role? - with a crew of 600+ (invincible was only about that many with the WAFUs) i think they would have struggled to man up Tiger & Blake in time. Mind you they could have adopted the recruiting tactics of 200 years ago and trawled around all the local pubs etc. Fancy waking up with a sore head & find yourself on a strange ship heading south!

Nice model by the way - was that the kit supplied 965 radar or ann aftermarket etched one?
