Airfix VC10 kit

A quality VC10 could come as a single kit with fuselage inserts for the Standards and Supers. Easy to add wing and centreline refuelling pods/blisters and then we could build any of the Standards/Supers/C1s/C1Ks/K2s/K3s/K4s from the same kit.

No you can't

It's a nice idea and could be done but there are lots of differences between the various aircraft operated by BOAC/BA, BUA and RAF, plus the differences between the standard and supers.

Simple inserts for the fuse doesnt do it.

Sorry :(

Has anyone built the Welsh ?

I've never built a vac form kit, but if it scrubs up well enough, I might be tempted. Never seem to see many close up pics of them.

Got one the other day for my Birthday; parts looks really nice in the Box and there is a nice selection of white metal parts. My only concern is with the engine fan/engine front white metal parts; the fan blades are very close to front of the engine and I think that they should be a bit further back - not easy to correct as the fan and the mouth of the engine nacelle is all one part (if you see what I mean...)

The latest iteration of the kit is better described as a mixed media kit, as it also includes a good selection of pressure cast resin parts as well as white metal.

Thanks guys.

If the engines look wrong, the airfix kits might as well be used with the Braz engines then. Perhaps I'm missing something, but the Airfix comes up well with a bit of preperation and a set of Braz engines. I've got one in the garage that I got off Ebay a month or so ago for about £10. What is the benefit of white metal u/c ? The plastic ones are more than strong enough and the general moulding of white metal I've had (guns) and seen (u/c pictures on't internet)needs quite a bit of fettling to tidy up.

The engines in the Welsh kit I have are pressure cast resin and given it is 144, is pretty much on the money.

Ah, I must have an earlier version of the Welsh kit; my engines are included on the vac form sheets, only the engine fronts/fan blades are made of white metal.

Didn't know there was a more up to date version of the kit with resin parts.

This is my stalled Welsh Super VC10, while I try and figure out some problems with the decals. The kit is simplicity itself as a vacform, simple fuselage, simple wings, highly recommended as a first vacform airliner, so if it now comes with resin engines a winner.

As I also had the kit with the vacform engines with white metal fronts that were way too shallow, and struggled to do anything with them, until Ivo bought out his set, which I got severals sets of, and couldn't be happier, they are really good.

The decals are Welsh, printed by Ray at Two Six, but when I put on the forward part, it sort of changed colour as it went around the nose, giving it a patchy look, then it cracked, making it something I have yet to decide what to do about, i'm thinking a light coat of paint is the go, and as it has been several years since I looked at it, I must get back and give something a try, because it is a scheme I really want.

Tony

IIRC all of the VC10K3s (ZA147, 148, 149 and 150) were ex-East African and I think they all had the extra switch.

I also forgot Nigerian, Ghana, and Middle East Airlines for the colour schemes.

My VC10 course said it was only 149 and 150 that had them......

wonder if the others were not in service at the time

I thought you VC10 nuts might be interested in this that I picked up when my LMS in Derby closed last Xmas. It is the flashing lights version - it was obviously second hand but appeared unstarted, although on checking we found a few smaller parts were missing, a door, one of the engine nacelle fronts , one of the clear stretched sprues that form part of the "fibre optics", and so on, hence the lady charged me a fiver for it.

I've already donated the undercarriage to someone who wanted it - I will probably build it wheels up anyway on the superb stand it comes with, which holds the batteries for the flashing lights etc. (unless someone makes me an obscene offer for it!). I will probably have to get an Airfix tanker version to replace some of the missing parts, and Welsh decals as well as the kit ones are very old and yellowed.

the "fibre optics" with a hunking great switch to fit in the stand and miniature screw base light bulbs!

I'm really enjoying this thread which is unusual for me as I don't normally do "civils" but the VC10 has always been special to me having seen one as a kid at Farnborough in the early 60's (I think).

Cheers

Al.

I had the same problem with my 707, so I painted the cheatlines with Humbrol No.15 which looks good enough for me and matches the decals well. This is looking great, looking forward to seeing your progress and completion. Here's painted cheatlines in Humbrol 15....

With relation to the discussions earlier in the thread of 1/72 VC-10's, someone in my local club has built one (amongst other things). He kitbashed and scratchbuilt it using a Heller B707 as a base.

Visible here on the right of shot:

The Brittania is his as as well, along with most of whats on the table beyond (including Hastings, Beverly and Tristar all in 1/72).

I don't know too much about the work involved unfortunately, other than to say it looks impressive, and in the words of the builder was "bloody difficult!"

Here is a link to another shot of it.

I won't mention the builders name since I don't know what sort of internet presence he has (and haven't asked permission), but he is one of the nicest and most inspirational modellers I have had the pleasure of meeting. He is an older guy, and specialises to a degree in RAF transport and trainer types, RAF helicopters and US aircraft operated by the RAF. He doesn't appear to let any apparent obstacle get in his way (like say there not being an actual kit available), no matter how relatively esoteric the subject, and skillfully uses just about every old and new school technique required to get a result.

I am not a VC-10 expert in any way (being able to identify one is about the extent of my knowledge), but any accuracy shortfalls on this model could I think be forgiven by the fact it exists at all :).
