VERY nice indeed!

on your XX164, I noticed that the inboard wings are white (at least, they look white on my screen)

I thought the standard training scheme called for light grey inboard wing sections. Did 100 squadron actually have a Hawk painted with white inboard wing panels?

Just wondering

Cheers!

John

Looks grey on my screen. Possibly the colour has 'washed' out a bit in the photo.

I think you will find they are grey in the photo. XX164 was a Valley jet and I can remember prepping it, along with some ex Brawdy aircraft with the target towing gear on them, for transfer to Tatty Ton at Wyton. It definatly had the standard Light Aircraft Grey on the wings as did all 4FTS aircraft.

oh well, incidently xtradecal has them as white on all of there decal sheets, im not arguing i believe you you were there i they wernt, but i can understand why they get things wrong, i was convinced by the photo, but as you say, colours can be distorted, next one will be grey

thanks

I've noticed a few inaccuracies on the Xtradecal instruction sheets and some decals, low viz Lightning fin flashes for example - wrong shape, so I always check as much as possible, before commiting myself. I still make mistakes - we all do!

Just trying to help.

and will turn it in to this xx253

0947446.jpg

im using the kits decals and paint call outs

now the plastic is 2 tone and needs lots of filler, the decals have yellowed a bit

100_2751.jpg

100_2750.jpg

100_2742.jpg

but im quite surprised the decals are going on like a dream and although the paint looks a little dark to me she looks ok

anyway im on nights so the rest will have to wait

wow, the old Matchbox Hawk! Bravo :) I remember making one of those once, alongside an Airfix example. I do remember the decals were good, but the sod of it was the undercarriage, which I think was the case of small leg locating pins going into large kind of holes in the wings, but not the same as the Airfix version. Happy days...

The codes in your pics do indeed look white, and I think every source I have seen shows them as white, but of course I may be wrong. But those pics show a good difference between the LAG inner wings and the white markings :) I think I am gonna try and do a red white and blue one next.

Although I agree that the tops of the wings do *look* white in the photo, I think you're seeing tricks played by the sun at altitude.

As you can see by the link, Red/White/Grey Valley Hawk the inner wing panels are most definetly grey

Now, in the case of XX342 (as pointed out in a much earlier post) this aircraft did appear to have the inner panels painted white after Boscombe received it... but not initially

First pic after they received XX342

After it had been there a while, and could get slotted in for repaint, it appears to have taken on the typcial A&AEE scheme

1st example with white inner panels

2nd shot with white inner panels

Please keep in mind, the aircraft at A&AEE Boscombe Down have the unique "Rasberry Ripple" scheme that is non-standard for any other unit. The first image of XX342 was taken early in the aircraft's career at Boscombe and does not represent "typical" of the markings.

As you were modeling a Hawk typcial of the 1980's and 90's, I'm pretty sure that the standard "Red/White/Grey" would have applied.

Love your Hawk production line

Look forward to seeing more of your builds!

Cheers!

John

see the inner wings look white to me, i believe everyone when they say they are light grey, but i can understand how xtradecal got them down as white

any way the matchbox kit (thats for the warning about the under cart)

decals on, they need sealing and the undercart and pitol needs doing then thats it!

thanks john, just spotted your post, i think your right about the sun, it must have been a very very light grey, what i was trying to make a point of, was that there are lots of hwak photos out there that are misleading and i can understand why decal manifacturers get it wrong, for example i checked the photos quickly and thought ok, thats white and went for that, now i check more and more photos i can see the differences but research was not always my strong point, but im learning!! so leason learned and lets face it i have plenty of time to practice i have another 178 to make!

Oh, absolutely Mark

Please don't take my post in anyway as knocking

The number of models that I built with incorrect paint schemes probably out numbers the number that I have with correct colours!

I agree, photos are so misleading and I too see how a decal manufacturer can get it wrong! I can see where you would draw your conclusions from

Like you said, lesson learned

I just enjoyed talking about the Hawk (which is one of the reasons that I love vising this site)

So, thank you for your thread as I am really enjoying watching the numbers grow

Getting back to your Matchbox Hawk for a sec, I was curious what you were doing for the smoke pod as I don't recall Matchbox including one in the kit

Cheers!

Very nice stuff Mark. You've made the old Matchbox kit look very much up to date.

Thanks for the Finnish decals!

yup.. that much I remember! I think it wasn't so much holes that the legs went into, more like circles of plastic that were flush with the wing, and twice the size of the legs! I only ever made the one..

I'd like to find an original Matchbox release of the Hawk though, as I believe it had markings for XX154, which I know is a bit pointless seing as I have made it, but I can't recall what the other option was on the decals. At least Matchbox updated the moulds to include wing fences, unlike Airfix!
