jasman71
I think that little pod is used for making the radar signature much bigger? I have seen them before on various Hawks, always carried below the fuselage in the pics I have seen. I am not 100% but I think that is it's purpose in life
xffw45343tg
Thanks Jas. With a bit of luck, one of the armourers will be along shortly with its name, make and CoG. Wonder what its hanging on too?
PHIL B
Thanks Jas. With a bit of luck, one of the armourers will be along shortly with its name, make and CoG. Wonder what its hanging on too? I'm no armourer but I think its support frame was made from old iron girders left over from the Vulcan Black Buck pylons. Either that or they fell off the Forth Bridge. So Mark, are you going to do the pod with its chequered finish in 1/72? Phil
Mark M
i wasnt planning too, but ill see what i can find in the spares box, for the boc and ironbrew

Wonder what its hanging on too? a direct quote from an online page about the Hawk... "..In some cases the agile Hawk is used in "aggressor" training, fitted with radar signature enhancement devices to simulate a larger aircraft.." Must be some spare squadron markings to do the chequers on it, use up some bored decals Edited June 11, 2010 by jasman71
xffw45343tg
Sorry Jas - I didn't mean it to sound like I didn't trust your identification & I hope I haven't offended. It's just that the likes of Spike, Bombed, Shar etc have often fitted these things themselves and so give interesting perspectives not found in books. Howard of Effingham
63 sqn yellow and black checks would be ideal for this little pod. available on a number of modeldecal and xtradecal sheets, methinks.

I wanted to find a good pic of one online, as I have a few in books at home, but what to type for a search.. I ended up with ' BAe HAwk radar enhancement pod under fuselage' and got a few returns.. That quote was from one page in there, so as much as anything it was to confirm to me what it is for too Probably shouldn't be impossible to build, but may be a tad small in 72 though, especially if trying to get a chequered decal to wrap around, but may be easier in 48 and 32. Mark M
i have some old airfix hurricane drop tanks which look about right size and shape, ill have a go at painting them yellow and masking the squares and see what happens, alough i may also make a strip of yellow black cheques and print a decal strip when i print this week (when the paper arrives), not sure what to use for the iron attachment yet? ant ideas any more pictures would be great especially with positioning Edited June 12, 2010 by markmarples
Scarlet
Wozzat pod then Phil? Luneberg lens radar reflector. As you've already said it increases the Hawk's radar signature. The bracket it's bolted to looks very much like a mount for a rearward facing camera. I can remember fitting one at Valley. The bracket used some of the mounts for the gun pod. If I remember right a rearward facing camera was used to stop the lens getting covered with crap and then the film was played backwards to make it look as if the aircraft was flying forward! jasman71
looking good sir! I need to do a blue and red one sometime; I have decals for 3 to do, but was never sure of the blue to use. I have found my old Xrtracolor dunkelblue so I may try that. I did my 164 without the blue though I must admit it does look better with it! OK, you'll hate me for this, but a little reminder for all your future Hawks... have a look at where the wing fences go - they need to be on the outermost cutouts on the bottom wing, or nearer the wingtips than the fuselage (in line with the ends of the flaps/ailerons). I only noticed because the red wing areas on 164 looked a smidge large... and that is why Please don't shoot me. I am just the messenger (sent from the voices in my head )

Own up, you were just distracted by.... I don't look at their instructions any more, so I tend to make them pretty much the same way.. for example I put all the cockpit parts, except for the seats, into the right sides, glue them up.. then after painting the first grey coat onto them, I am glueing the wings together, after cutting out the outer locating points for the fences.. Then glue the wings together, add the fences, and the flap actuators... just a little routine I get into.. I just try to wizz through the construction fairly quickly til I am at the painting stage, I tend to enjoy it more then, having my blank.. er.. grey canvas.. to paint upon I often wonder if Airfix would sell me 30 or so at a discounted price and without the boxes, instructions, or decals even... HA! I wonder if they'd sponsor us!
