RWD 14b "Czapla" (1/72)

Recommended Posts

Hello all after long break!

Today I wanted to show you mine latest work which is polish pre-war recon plane RWD - 14b Czapla. I built this model about month ago, but because it was participating in forum competiotion project I couldn't show it earlier (it was one of the competition's rule).

About the plane. It was obsolete when starting the duty. There were plans to replace it with much better and new planes like LWS-3 Mewa, but begining of the war stopped those actions. So RWD-14b was used in September 1939 and was doing recon flights for polish army HQ. A lot of them were lost (mainly on ground) or captured by germans. There are not many pre-war photos of that plane. Well known photos are usually of wreckes destroyed by Germans.

About the kit. Model was manufactured about 30-40 years ago... Quality and fitting of the parts isn't very good kindly speaking. To be honest the kit is bad in every part :) Many modellers resign making that kit because of it's disadvanteges. It was one of the reasons why I tried to built it. I wanted to have that "impossible" model in my collection :) To upgrade the kit I used Part's photoetched sheet with great cockpit and few exterior details. I also used resin engine. It's hard to note every change I made in this kit. I changed almost everything! :D Only fuselage and wing, after few surgeries, are straight from the box :)

Okay , maybe enough talking. Here are some photos for you. Hope you will like it!

PS. Czapla is a big bird called heron in english.

Great to see such an unusual subject, lovely build. I can well believe that that the Luftwaffe would have made short work of them in combat. The courage of the crews must have been desperate.

I've just made this kit, and the instructions say to paint the leading edge of the engine cowling in copper, presumably to simulate an exhaust collector ring as in the Jupiter engined polish aircraft. But this model kit (and the real thing) has an exhaust collector at the rear of the engine. So is this instruction just a mistake by the kit maker?

Nice - can I ask what the other types (and model kits) in your picture are - I assume I see a Pair of PZL 7 or 11s - I have built a PZL 11, 23 and 37 - I am currently doing a PZL 11 and would like to add other Polish types if possible.

Hello

@Stanley Ipkiss I'm really interested in this model. I wondered if you could point me to where the pictures are showing your model?

I would be interested to know how you dealt with the too narrow fuselage?

All best regards

TonyT

Thank you J-W :thanks: !

What a simple but elegant solution. The PART set utterly transforms the kit.

Also the replacement engine, wing improvements; show this kit is still OK, just fine.

Now I can pull my fluorescent blue ZTS out of the stash. But not before I order the PART photo-etch from Jadar :pilot: .

Best regards

TonyT
