TheModeller Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Out and on the shelves, I took about 5 seconds to decide to have one even though I haven't built any 1/35th armour in the better parts of 25 years! Beautiful little kit, lots of options, sharp mouldings, and not German! I was also impressed with the price, considering the 1/48th Tilly hit the shelves at £15 quid I was a little worried that this bigger one would be double that, not so, £21.75! My only quibble is that they've stuffed up some of the markings, the Highland Division insignia is backwards, blue on red when it should be red on blue, and some of the serial numbers are apparently for contemporary restorations as a thank-you to the guys that allowed Tamiya access to thier personal vehicles for research purposes. C'est la vie, there are two new books out with lots of ideas for plenty of alternatives. All in all I really like it.
Guest snipersmudge Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 Just got one myself today and I agree it is a super kit. As for the decals I know accurate armour now sell a set of decals for the tilly Pete
Overhaulin Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 Info on the Tamiya site says the engine bay is highly detailed. What do you think I'm also glad they appear to have dropped the RAF scheme. Trip to Modelzone on the cards then.
Ivan Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 Saw the Tilly on loads of stands at the Poole Vikings show today - apparently they all got it yesterday. Their prices varied from £19.99 to £21.99. Mine turned up from Lucky Model this morning for much less than that.
TheModeller Posted April 18, 2010 Author Posted April 18, 2010 (edited) Info on the Tamiya site says the engine bay is highly detailed. What do you thinkI'm also glad they appear to have dropped the RAF scheme. Trip to Modelzone on the cards then. For the most part the detail is very good, all the main components of the engine are there, some ignition-wiring, battery cables and fuel-lines will busy it up. The options for the folding seats in the back are nice. Separate doors are a great feature but they seem very skinny and will need door-lining panels added to give them some presence if you want them open. The one annoying thing is that the drivers floor pedals are missing, I know thats not unusual for a Tamiya soft-skin but they have included the handbrake lever and the fire extinguisher on the transmission tunnel! Also missing are the rifle and pick stowage mounts inside the door pillars behind the front seats. I'd have liked to have had a bit more finesse applied to the tilt, the one in the 1/48th kit is very unconvincing, the larger one is a bit better but I'll do away with the moulded tie-ropes if I use it. Mike Shackleton has mentioned some detail issues over on the M/L forum, mainly headlamps fittings, but there are now plenty of references around for Tillys so it shouldn't be hard to pin one down. As I said the decals are a mixed bag but the new AA decal sheet looks to be an ideal substitute. Edited April 18, 2010 by TheModeller
