Kari Lumppio
Hello! I have tried to search on Internet markings and colour information for this particular RAF Hudson I. What I found was that the airplane was destroyed in fatal accident December 14th, 1941 but nothing about colour and markings. Are any of the forum participants able to point me to the right direction for the answers: publication, homepage, anything? I would guess the upper colours would be Dark Brown and Dark Green but underside colour varied a lot? Markingswise squadron and individual codes only or did 233 sqn have any individual markings at the early period? Any help warmly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Kari

Thanks in advance, Kari Hi Kari , Can't tell you much , other then the fact that the info in Hendrie's book on the Hudson , indicates that although N7223 had served on 233Sq, at the time of its loss it was with I OTU and dived into the ground at Silloth on the date mentioned Cheers Terry McGrady
John
Hello Kari. In February 1940 the undersurfaces would have been either Aluminium or Night, at the discretion of the operational command. By mid-1940 Aluminium had been replaced by Sky. That's basically it for early Hudsons. John 1
iang
Kari, This Hudson had an interesting career, as it played a small part in the Bismarck chase in May 1941, while with 233 Squadron. On 27/28 May 233 Squadron were detailed to provide cover for Tovey's force as they returned to Scapa. N7223 provided escort for KGV and Rodney. On 28/5, Hudsons of 233 Sq were atacked by Ju88s (which also attacked Tovey's ships, sinking the destroyer Mashona south-west of Ireland), though N7223 wasn't engaged. I don't know the individual aircraft number while with 233 Squadron (it wasn't 'E', 'D', 'N' or 'T'), as this is not recorded in the ORB during May 1941 - though is possibly detailed earlier. I will be revisiting the ORB to find the aircraft ID letters that I'm missing, and if I find N7223 I'll let you know. Simon
Hello A little too late, maybe, but the 233 Sqn ORB Appendices have a combat report from the crew of N7223 from November 10th 1939 when it attacked a submarine in position QSLZ 4030, and the aircraft's individual letter is recorded as 'V.'
