Exercise Joint Warrior

Evening all, had an as yet unknown C-130 taxi in at Glasgow tonight and reminded me that Exercise Joint Warrior kicks off of Mon 12th for nearly a fortnight so expect some additional military activity if you're near any of the big bases. Kinloss usually see's plenty activity, and with Leuchars out of action, and 111 Sqn operating out of Lossie with the GRF then I dare say Lossie will be pretty busy too.

Want to see lots of pic's in the aircraft photography thread!!

Will let you know who the mystery C-130 belongs to if it's still there tomorrow!

JW will mean the base, or should that be station, is back to a pretty busy place. For the next couple of weeks there will be 6 P3s (including a Kiwi one) and Atlantiques; four Hawks, a couple of VC10s if they turn up. I believe there is a US mil 737 there at present. Shortly after this there will be a number of visiting FJ detachments and then in May 6+ international C130Js. Then we are back into CQWI/TLT season again which brings us to July and the (planned) delivery of 2 MRA4s. So not that quiet, just very little in the way of the roar of the mighty Spey!!

More info on JW - http://forargyll.com/2010/04/exercise-join...ers-at-faslane/

The MoD site is superb, also found this guide for maritime op's - http://www.rnopsscotland.com/JW101%20Brief...d%20ferries.pdf

If you look at the tables on page 4 and 16, there's plenty sub activity around the west coast, and it looks like Cape Wrath and Garvie Island are going to get a serious pasting on the 14/15th and then the 19th-22nd!!! There can't be much left of Garvie Island, I'm sure they've been bombing that lump of rock since I was in nappies!!

The C-130 from lastnight was a USN C-130T (s/n 165349) Callsign "CNV6701" of VR-55 a Fleet Support Squadron that seem a well travelled unit.

Rgds,

Well

Joint Warrior started off with a huge roar and us getting buzzed by two Tornadoes doing a mock attack on Lossiemouth Air base.

Fantastic weather for us to see it all too.

Hope to see more and to get to the end of the runway for some pics.

Believe its the taxi-ways at Leuchars being re-done in prep for the low slung inlet of the Typhoon!! Apparently (and I have it on good authority!) the rather cold and icy weather took its toll on the taxiways and they're being re-surfaced. The runways was done in 2008.

Just read in AFM that the runway is being repaired because of a 'faulty surface'. Must have been the same contractor who did the roads round here.

(I'm not doubting your info by the way, Eng. You live a lot closer to the place than I do).

Hi all,

the "bombing" at Lossie this morning was actually the tactical role demonstration practice for this years display season. Was Notam'd the day before. Usually display practices are done nice and early before the usual days flying commences. Nothing seen in the Notams for tomorrow (14th). I'll be heading up on Thursday.... :D

Yes that appears to be the case indeed, wouldn't be surprised if the taxiways are done as well. Wonder how they discovered the "faulty surface" - got visions of a few Tonka's up there with shredded tyres and compressor damage!!

Just been buzzed by a Chinook heading west down the Clyde - beautiful day for hanging off the rear ramp too!!

Nice to hear there's plenty action going on around the country. Wed/Thurs this week and Mon-Wed next week seemed to have the busiest timetables according to the MoD site.

Anyone know if the "volcanic ash incident" has put the JW exercise on hold? I know UK airspace has been closed down today for all commercial traffic, but wondered if stoofing round at less than 5000ft would get you off the hook.

We never saw anything other than the rescue helo and a rig service helo flying over Lossie and Silversands after the ban on flying.

Was a great shame as I held off going to the end of the runway until it was too late!

Bugger

It was far too quiet for our liking.
