Note on page 2/3, Hurricane, "5" HC-452. Note Metal wings and DeHavilland propeller.

And original paint!

some Finnish Hurricanes had fabric wings, but i think most were metal. From what I have seen it is the early planes with fabric wings. HC-451 is fabric winged, HC-456 is metal.

I think all the Finnish Hurricanes had DH Props.

There are some other useful shots here.

a load of photos of the Brewster Buffalo BW-372, which was pulled out of a lake. In original paint

Finnish Hurricanes

Note that this is NOT fabric winged. Also of note that there are two access panels on the port side. The smaller 3rd rectangular panel was introduced in mid 1940. And the early 5 spoke wheels.

I can't find the RAF serials of the Finnish planes, but they will be out there, but there were 12 with Merlin III engines and DH props, drawn from British maintenance units. Only the first 680 Hurricanes built had fabric wings so by jan 1940 the MU's had metal winged ones.

[found the serials, they are in a Finnis book, deso anyone need them?]

for what's still about

http://www.preservedaxisaircraft.com/Finland/finnish.htm (also list german Italian etc http://www.preservedaxisaircraft.com/)

has some photos too.

in a search on Hyperscale I found that WW2 era Finnish interior grey is matched by RAF Medium Sea Grey, a quote from Kari Stenman. (note decals below)

Note, for specific information try emailing the Finnish Airforce musuem. I did, and they were very helpful.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/martti.kuivalainen/engindex.html

whch will list I think what decal sheets are available from who.

for Finnish decals.

over 150 cockades both in 1/72 and 1/48!

12 different sizes from 20cm to 120 cm (1/72) and

from 20 cm to 72 cm (1/48).

Including instructions about the use of the different

sizes.

Designed by Kari Stenman, printed in England.

Inscale are available from from Hannants.

A suggestion, a decals swap bank for this, as I doubt if anyone is going to do 5 Hurricanes etc, so if someone buys a sheet perhaps they post up what they won't use? Or is that too complex?

The IPMS decal bank does have a load of Finnish decals already I believe.

Now.... where can you get Finnish stencils in 1/48th.................

I'll post some colour info next

Colours, figure this will be of use.

from a Finnish magazine, i was sent a xerox by the musuem.

Note

for WW2

Sotakoneet = basically warplanes

[sota = war, kone = machine, i think, I can't easily reach the dictionary right now, note Finnish does not have prepostions, so words tend to have a variety of endings added to them to change tense and gender. from an English speakers point of view - confusing, as you need to know the root word and be able to spot the added word endings. This is just a warning as to the difficulty of the language. Note that endings get added to names as well, eg Humbrolin, Xtracolorin]

that the Finnish cockpit grey, Harmaa

(on Finnish built planes, reconditioned planes, or planes that have had a major overhaul at the aircraft works at Tampere.)

is matched by RAF Medium Sea Grey

FS 36270

and the Olive Green, Oliivin vihrea, topsurface camo with black, is matched by FAA Dark Slate Grey

34906

http://www.colorserver.net/showcolor.asp?fs=34096+36270+

http://www.simmerspaintshop.com/page-RGB-colors-UK.html

Musta is black, and is just black, not black green. For scale use suggest a very dark grey.

Vaaleen sininen DN-vari

the underside blue was adopted after getting Do17's, they liked the colour, and adopted it, and thus is the same as Luftwaffe RLM 65. Note DN = Dornier

the colour chart list two FS matches, but they are very close.

the insignia blue is Tunnuksen sininen. listed as 35123, Sininen means blue, and is derived from Russian I believe.

http://www.colorserver.net/showcolor.asp?f...270+35123+35414

Merkkivari I assume meaning markings (the Finns like to Finnicise words, so 'Bar' as in pub becomes 'Baari' for example)

Punainen - red

Keltainen - yellow

http://www.colorserver.net/showcolor.asp?f...538+33655+31302

the two letter codes in main use section refer to serials on Finnish aircraft, eg

HC - Hurricane

DN - Dornier

JU - Junkers

MT- Messerschmitt

FA- Fiat

CA - Caudron

MS- Morane Saulnier

BW- Brewster

GL - Gladiator

BL - Blenhiem

LY- Lysander

you get the idea....

Hope this answers some colour questions from the off. If you PM me I can send a link to a PDF of an out of print books on Finnish Camo.

terve!
