Coastal Command Wimpy

G'day people,

Here are some pics of my 1/72 Matchbox Wellington in Coastal command colours. The kit represents a 455SQN RAAF bird operating from Bone, Algeria.

I extended the Leigh Light and added rockets (stolen from a Beaufighter kit).

enjoy

For what it' worth, I still think Matchbox's rendidtion of the geodetic fabric is still the best (I have the MPM 1/72 Mk.Ic kit as well as the Trumpy 1/48 kits), and I don't think the Trumpy 1/72 offering nailed it either. I grant you though, they all ahve better internal details, if for no othet reason that Matchbox didn't include any!

cheers,

Pappy

Very nice execution.

One question: 455 Sqn? Surely they flew the Hampden and Beaufighter. I should think this is a 458 Sqn machine.

G'day Kyrre,

I am just quoting the instructions. You may be right. I really only dabble in the prop stuff, as I mainly like to build modern heavy metal,

Really nice build !! ? Any idea why the exhaust's run into inside the wings ?? :analintruder:

G'day,

The short answer is I don't know. I suspect that the white 'tube' running from the wing surface into the flame damper exhaust is there to provide structural support rather than direct exhaust gases into the wings, which would contain the fuel tanks.

I do know that the larger tubes that exit behind the rocket rails are the wing fuel vent/dump tubes. These had a corrugated bit in the middle which would flex as they were directly attached to the flaps.

cheers,

Pappy

Looks great in that scheme. Did you outline the clear panes with black? Looks like it on the first pic, and I like the effect.

G'day Strangeways,

I intially sprayed the framing black (logical I thought as most bomber command Wimpy's had black cockpits) then I went over that in white,

cheers,

Pappy

Hey Pappy, thats brilliant mate! :yahoo:

How did you find getting the white paint to cover the weird three coloured plastic Matchbox used? I'm guessing you primered it first?

G'day Mikeew,

Thanks for the nice words, yes I did prime.

Unfortunately, we don't have access to the Halfords spraycan range down under, so I used a can of Mr Surfacer 1200 spray primer. This stuff is expensive, but it resulted in a silky smooth surface with a neutral colour density. I then masked off the grey area around the rocket tubes, then misted on 2 coats of Tamiya matt white followed by 'wet' coat of Tamiya gloss white.

cheers,

Pappy
