silverburn
Sorry for the absence chaps, but life and babies have been getting in the way, and sucking up all my free time! I've kicked off again with a Venom (Ta Julien!) - was tempted to do some scratch building & AM stuff, but... a) I can't be bothered, and b ) AM stuff is decidedly lacking. Never mind, I'm sure it'll be fine OOB... Halfway through the engine, and already I'm not convinced the Revell colours are correct; green???? Some weathering and detail work to do there too...it looks distinctly "fake" just now. (Pics later this morning btw - just creating a placeholder for now) Edited March 14, 2010 by silverburn
silverburn
As promised, some pics... My first venom, and it's turning out ok so far...it's not exactly modern, but still coming together ok. Only real snag has been some filing required to get the engine bulkhead to fit cleanly...it's still pushed the fuselage slightly wide, but nothing a bit of filler can't fix. Likewise the usual joins on the fuselage will need tidied, but there's nothing too drastic to do here - only minor work required. A minor bit of work on the exhaust too I see - the panel join is visible on the corner...gotta tidy that up. Not sure how I missed that. Pit has been a bit of a let down - managed to drop the instrument panel while carrying it through to dry...and it landed face down! Decals wrecked...have made an attempt to tidy, but it's not as nice...Also, I suspect my engine bay green is too light. I might weather it, when I do the engine itself (it looks so "fake" right now) - it might tone it down a little! Inner wings on tomorrow I recon, and the first round of filling and smoothing. NickParker
Finished this very kit just before christmas and loved it, plenty of filling on this one especially around the wing joints and fairing area but still great fun.I'll be watching with interest. silverburn
Nice looking Venom! Here's tonight's progress...mainly filling and sanding! Got another round of it to go.... Engine weathered too. Here's the sight before it starts to get better...fully filled up, awaiting sanding Quick round of primer to find the gaps...bit of work to do around the gear wells, and another run at the vents and belly seams
ollieholmes
This looks nice but what is happening about the mass Red Arrows build?
silverburn
This looks nice but what is happening about the mass Red Arrows build? Coming soon, rest assured! This venom is another of my father-in-law's favourites, so it's a quick build before his next visit. But mainly I've been tied up with baby stuff! This is important, because to conduct the experiment correctly, I need a full day's run at it....impossible with a newborn (well, 3 months now) around! silverburn
Ok, today's progress: - main flying & steering bits now built, filled & sanded. There's a couple of imperfections, but you have to be looking for them to see them! - primed and coat of Sea Grey laid down. I chose Sea Grey 'cos: a) I'm a rattle-canner, so my palette is limited and b ) ...it's pretty damned close! Close shave too - I literally ran out on the last sweep! Tomorrow sees the masking fun begin, and laying down of some Shock creme (off-white). I swithered to go with diamond grey, but all the photo's I've see show the lighter underside as having a slight tint to it. The nose will be sprayed shock black and attached at the end. silverburn
More painting done! Masking was interesting...my first attempt at "curved" masks (on nose and tailplanes). Semi successful...I need to work on my 'transitions' (ie going from a straight line to the curve itself could be smoother). The only one I got 'right' was the inner curve on the starboard tailplane boom (see pic). And I've discovered the technique requires a super sharp knife. And it's best to 'drag' the knife, rather than 'push down'. A coat of lacquer, and here we are. Arsed up the outer wings though...managed to spray them with primer, not lacquer! Will need to order some more sea grey too, as I've run out! Oh well...plenty time to work on the outer nacelles, rockets and the undercart in the meantime. And some decals I guess. NickParker
Man you don't half work fast, it took me about two months to get to that stage! by the way a knife with a swivel blade is extremely useful for cutting those pesky curves. Brought mine from the arts and krafts department at the range for about three pounds.
TomTheTomcat
Sweet ! Finished this very kit just before christmas and loved it, plenty of filling on this one especially around the wing joints and fairing area but still great fun.I'll be watching with interest. Is the engine going to be visible on the finished model? It looks great anyway! More painting done!Masking was interesting...my first attempt at "curved" masks (on nose and tailplanes). Spazman
Nice work! I've always liked the various twin boom British jets, in particular the Venom. Looks like she'll be pretty when done! Ted
silverburn
Hi again all, Another small bit of progress between nappy changes and work. Mainly, the outer wings are now re-sprayed, after the sea grey arrived in the post. Also the wing "tanks" are painted too, and the whole lot glossed and dry-fitted. I do have to say...I like the tanks; they've come out very well - for the second time the montana gold and the lacquer have worked well together - they're smooth and glossy. The nose also came out well; not sure why I've had so much luck with finish this time! I think I'll paint the leading edge of the wings black (purely because I want to, rather than any technical accuracy reason), seal it up, then start the decals, and the small breaky bits (undercarts etc). TonyT
To get a smooth curve I use line tape as it stretches to form curves, looking good though, love the engine, its stunning, used to sit between two of those or derwents on an MRD Edited March 12, 2010 by TonyT
silverburn
And now the decals are on, and sealed in! Matt lacquer for the main body, but I'll be leaving the radome gloss. Just looks "right" that way... Speaking of doing my own thing . - I've avoided the "teeth" version of the decals...call me a fuddy-duddy, but I always associate "teeth" with Phantoms and old-style typhoons. Just looks weird here in my eyes... It was also nice to do one without the suez markings, but I'll be damned if I can tell you what Squadron these decals are for! The port black hatching one on the wing end "thingy" shrank a bit...no biggie though - nothing a bit of black paint can't fit, thankfully. Now the fun begins...all the fiddly bits (carts, missiles, sticky-outy bits etc). I also have to finish the seats and get them in before sealing the pit lid down. Toying with the idea of putting the pilots in. Most stuff still dry fitted for the moment. To get a smooth curve I use line tape as it stretches to form curves, looking good though, love the engine, its stunning, used to sit between two of those or derwents on an MRD Ooh prey tell more! **edit: ...by mistake! TonyT
line tape is what automotive painters use, it gives a sharp line and is flexible so you can stretch it to curve it, if you have ever seen overhauling etc, that is what they use

TonyT
we had two engines with nozzles on them mounted on the front of a bowser on a frame and sat between them and ran them clearing the ice off the runway or taxiways as the bowser drove along slowly, get the angle of the nozzles wrong and you would see sheets of black ice lifting in front of your eyes that turned out to be layers of tarmac lol oops......... one on here http://www.rafmtd.co.uk/1629/1629archive3.html you may not be able to access this http://www.pprune.org/military-aircrew/401...-clearance.html pics of the thread above courtesy of VP8

LOL - now *that's* brilliant...using an old jet engine to clear runways...I doubt we'll see B&Q selling these anytime soon! today's update...undercarts on! Canopy on! seats in! I got a small finger print on the front glass...very, very annoying! Also got to paint the sidewalls of the undercart bays the correct colour too. Not very detailed undercart legs, but I've tried to paint them into submission. A bit of weathering will improve them too. I recon it's the home straight after this...undercart covers, sticky outy bits, rockets etc.
