TonyT
1/96th.....I did an RAF version of the Airfix one several years ago (altho I couldn't be bothered to lengthen or widen it to RAF spec). Looks good in military colours....look forward to seeing a Gulf war version!! Just checked on evilbay its 1/78th ? Pondered lengthening it, widening it, but see if my skill set is up to any of this because of the canopy. Ideas so far and I hope I have the skill to do them are.... I fancy and will have a bash at looking at ditching the clamshell doors and adding a chinook style rear ramp, introducing a sea stallion type nose with refuelling probe, plus radar bumbs and humps, possibly re-engining either with a high ration bypass engines or with a modern turbopropish idea which would have add sandfilters and exhaust deflectors, also thought about fuselage sponsons along the side aka Chinook and Sea Stallion and moving the main gear from the nacelles and putting them in the aft sponsons, possibly cutting out a square gun window fwd stb cabin and aft port cabin, then mucking around with the rear fins adding flare or chaff dispensers, oh and possible making the rotors into a berp design at the back tips.... other things that sort of float my boat on it would be to add drooped wingtips and onto one an RWR pod and on the other a sidewinder or similar.... I even thought on the aft side of one sponson a bulged out additional fairing holding an inflight refuelling basket would be nice........ and an apu in the other...... Sort of an RAF equiv of a pave low Sea Stallion come Chinook.... Ahh dreams but have ordered one and will see what it's like and if it is viable.. cause I have fingers like pigs t*ts and this is small scale stuff Edited March 18, 2010 by TonyT

marty_hopkirk
Ok thinking along the lines and don't laugh.......Revell "some god awful scale I forget" Gulf War Fairey Rotordyne HC Mk3 and I am going to try a first and heavily modify it from the classic kit....... S&M Dec have a what if decal sheet in their catalogue, that includes an RAF option. The 1/78 scale is not far off the mark. The Revell kit is very good and accurate and ahead of its time in a lot of respects. Marty... Edited March 20, 2010 by marty_hopkirk

Just a suggestion, but how about combining the Chinook fuselage (stretched?) with the Rotodyne wings/tail/rotor assembly? would be easier than modifying the existing plastic.... Just a suggestion, but how about combining the Chinook fuselage (stretched?) with the Rotodyne wings/tail/rotor assembly? would be easier than modifying the existing plastic.... Thanks this is the bigger version of the little drawing I thought of the Chinook just for the tanks, to modify the fuselage I would have to merge cockpits, cut off both pylons and craft in another and the wings.. also the Rotodyne I think is bigger, Rotodyne wise not knowing the differences in scale wise already I have the Revell one but ordered an Airfix one too, so may be able to merge both, but looking at the Revell one i may be able to add a strip between the joins, I was then going to add a Chinook type transmission access tunnels down the top over it for the aerial fits etc. to be installed in, not put many chaff or flare dispensers on the drawing yet as working on ideas, also what do you think to a Sea king style radar dome aft of the pylon? have come up with a cunning way to make these out of magic scupl paint scheme is my idea for a generic special forces deserty type one been thinking about putting the engines on backwards to make it a pusher too or putting something like a resin multi blader Herc version on if I can Find something Edited March 28, 2010 by TonyT

The 'nook is definately bigger than the 'dyne.... I've read elsewhere that there were problems with the engines on the 'dyne, in that they overheated if only running on one. So replacing them with a pair off a C-130 is a good idea.
Uncle Tadhg
Stick me down, I want to try building an Irish Air Corps Phantom, inspired by Gekko's profile. (Handy, the Ferrari GB ends the day this one starts! ) I've been beaten to it (a wee bit) by the last two entries, but sign me up for an Irish Air Corps F-5E. I've got a re-pop of the old Monogram kit in the stash. Much as I love Phantoms my imagination just won't allow me to make the jump to an FGR.2. Although it is tempting...
