Airfix Westland Lynx (help Needed)

Hi All,

I have been reading some build reports regarding the two kits mentioned above and the following two points about them have become very clear:

1. The lack of FOD guards for the intakes, you would have thought that a company which supposedly lives for accuracy, (Ur hum), would omit these rather prominent components from their kits, even more oddly they didn't even take the opportunity to correct this error when they updated the kit from HAS.1/2/3 to HMA.8! Can anyone please tell me the best way to add these items as the kit just doesn't look right without them?

2. I am informed that the main rotor head is set to low, which does seem to be correct when compared to plans and actual pictures of the lynx. I have also noted that the HobbyBoss kits are the opposite and is set to high. Does anyone know by how much in scale cm/mm's the rotor head needs to be raised on the Airfix kit?

And finally can someone please tell me what the internal cabin/cockpit colour(s) should be: Some sources say it's sea grey medium throughout, others that it's ocean grey or sea grey with the cockpit section matt black, Are all, some or any of these colours correct? I do have some pictures of this area, but to be honest in some it looks like sea grey medium in others it looks darker, all down to the light and camera on the day one assumes, but if anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Doug.

hello,

Someone else on here came up with a good idea for the mesh fod gaurds, (sorry if your reading this but i cant remember the post i read it on). Make the shape with milliput, paint it silver, then stretch some tights over it and spray black, remove tights and Dah dah, fod gaurds.

Or, just cut a small piece of tights off, stretch over gap, stick on and paint the frames onto it.

As for the iternal colours,

the frame in front of the cabin doors (inboard and forward faces) and forwards is matt black, (the cockpit).

be careful though as the aft face of that same frame is the same grey as the cabin.

I cant remember the exact name for the grey used in the cabin. Will have a look at work tomorrow and post next time i'm on.

Hope this is of some help.

Some of the Airwaves Lynx sets came (come) with photetch FOD guards as per this one (not sure of current availability though):

HMA.8 Airwaves etch

For my more recent kits, I have simply ogne with the Milliput solution although I didn't try the tights trick (I simply "handled them" letting my fingerprints look like mesh).

HAS.2 Milliput

HAS.3 ICE Milliput

So miliput FOD guards it is then, and Dark Admiralty Grey interior.

Thanks for all your help.

Doug.

Blob of milliput, rough shape - don't worry about them being spot on - the real ones get bent and battered around ;)

Someone else on here came up with a good idea for the mesh fod gaurds, (sorry if your reading this but i cant remember the post i read it on).

no problem ;)

Hi Billy,

Yes I did ask about the quarter lights on scale-rotors, it turns out that they should be square on all production models, so assume the airfix kit is based on the prototype.

Thanks for the other references as well.

Doug.
