mitchem Posted January 30, 2010 Share Posted January 30, 2010 (edited) Okay, so I was bitten by the bug on the Red Star Group build and decided to have a crack at a work in progress without a time-limit - gives me an excuse to build three other models at the same time without the pressure, you see.Anyway, while I was rummaging around in the loft, Toko's 1/72 Antonov An-72p caught my eye , and as I hadn't seen many of these around, I thought it was time to come on down....... progress will be slow, but that will only be because of me and not the model..... Not too much - I've been painting the cockpit and trying to figure out how much detail I want to put in. Mine is the cheaper Eastern Express boxing, which I understand to be the same molding albeit cheaper and lower molding quality. I suspect this plane to be a major tail sitter so I intend to close up the tail, exclude the cabin and pack as much weight forward. Tell you what, when I get home I'll go ahead and start a build thread on mine - perhaps we can motivate each other because I think we're in for a rough ride ahead! An article on Wikipedia said they wanted a jet with STOL capability, so using jet exhaust to go over the wing gave it an extra amount of lift. It's called the Coandă effect (also on Wikipedia!) mitchem Posted February 15, 2010 Author Share Posted February 15, 2010 Shucks, I've been so busy filling in ejector-pin marks in the cargo hold that I lost sight of my own thread ! (From top to bottom : roof, starboard wall, floor, port wall) Pretty pleased with the moulding and details on the kit overall, but I can't see myself going overboard with the build. (Lazy git at heart !) I bought the Red Star book on the Antonov Jet Twins as a reference and it looks as if the model is based on the prototype. (By the way, there are only a couple of pictures of the engines open - certainly not enough info if you're planning on super-detailing them imho) The cargo cabin comes with seating down the sides, but I have no plans on dropping the tail ramp or leaving the front door open. I really doubt whether anything would be seen through the windows as a result, so I'm not sure if I'll bother cutting the parts off the sprues. With regards to the Toko instructions, there is a decal placement plan on the back, but the decal sheet seems to have a few bits and bobs on it that don't appear on the plan ! (Let me know if you need a copy Supertom and we'll sort something out) As far as the painting guide is concerned, it shows the port and starboard side views and half a top view and half a bottom view. (Camouflage on the starboard top side will be a guessing game as a result) I'll be keeping an eye out for everyone's build threads ! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

mitchem Posted April 7, 2013 Author Share Posted April 7, 2013 ....started at the end of January 2010 and ran aground shortly afterwards ! Problem started when I taped the fuselage halves together with the cargo compartment inside, only to discover a massive gap at the back of the undercarriage bay : Couldn't think of an easy way out of this one, so I put everything back in the box, chucked it in the loft and promised myself never to start another WIP ! Fast forward three years and now my loft is buckling under the weight of polystyrene. After having decided to make more of an effort in finishing part-built kits, the An-72 came downstairs again. Loads of head-scratching eventually provided a flash of inspiration ! Why not read the instructions ? Imagine my embarrassment in finding out that the kit's undercarriage doors actually cover the gap !!! Spurred on by this discovery, I've made an effort to start work on the kit again. Deon suggested I might have fun with the engine pods..............I wouldn't exactly call it that ! Angle grinder to the rescue with lots of cutting, sanding, filling, priming, cutting, sanding, etc. I figured if I was going to have so much fun, I might as well laugh out loud, so I fabricated a couple of engine fans from a Coke can. Completely pointless exercise and not something I'd be in a rush to do again (I'm sure the specialists will point out the wrong number of blades or something), although it has given me some experience for a big project planed for 2014. and a three-quarter view : I've started rescribing the kit and work on the cockpit is going full-steam ahead. I have an AEW version somewhere in the stash and It is more of a pig to build than this one. Fibreglass fuselage halves anyone? Hope to see this one progress. mitchem Posted April 16, 2013 Author Share Posted April 16, 2013 (edited) So.....while I've been trying to rescribe the kit (no surprise that the engine pods are causing the most problems !), I've had a go at improving the cockpit. I'd like to think that the addition of scratch-built arm-rests, head-rests and some dials for the Navigator's panel have done the job, and in my mind, the cockpit is now officially categorised as "slightly less basic". Of course it's been a completely pointless exercise as hardly any of it's likely to be visible. ....at least I haven't put it back in the loft ! (Fit wasn't brilliant) Glued nose cone on (Fit wasn't brilliant) Glued nose undercarriage doors in (Fit wasn't brilliant) Started work on extending the rudder (Fit was brilliant but the part was too short by a couple of mm) Couldn't resist the temptation to jump the gun and see what I'm aiming for, by putting the pieces together temporarily : Still a long way to go but I'm closer today than I was yesterday !
