Hobbyboss 1/48th Tornado

Right - while the oil washes are drying off, I've done some other bits and bobs.

First up the ejection seats. I bought some Aeroclub 10As, but they seem a bit narrow for the cockpit ( or perhaps I should say the cockpit seems a bit wide for them!) Anyway I'd already added detail to the kit parts, so I've gone with them.

Heres painting pretty much done - just some neatening up and detailing to add.

Thanks to Spike ( Cheers mate!!) I now have a Sky Shadow pod, whihc I've tarted up a bit.

And the BOZ pod is having a makeover too!

Hoping to get the airframe up on its UC sometime today. tomorrow too.

Morning Campers, and what a day!! The mighty Saints take on the Pomposity later in the cup, followed by the Potters vs Man C later, with a bit of Ireland France rugby revenge to boot!: Its my birthday weekend ( 41 last wedensday , so a big feast this evening!!), and a I got a bit of modelling done prior to tidying it all way for the days later events.

Right here are a couple of pics of the model in its pre decal glossy state. I brushed on 3 coats of Quick Shine ( http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.p...;hl=quick+shine ).

As you can see I had already glossed the black fin top, to seal the matt paint i used) so I took the oppurtunity to apply a couple of the Xtradecals earlier on. using microset and sol - they go on very well indeed.

One more construction thing I've realised is watch the alignment of the main gear parts, as mine seem to want to angle in the wheels ( i.e. when viewed from the top or bottom the wheels look toed in) when I dry fit them. I can fix this - but if I were doing it again I'd dry fit the wheels to the UC units when building them and tweek the postion so it didnt happen.

So once the varnish has had 24 hours to fully harden, I think its time for some more decals.

We are nearly there!!

Jon- I'm heading up to the Lakes om Monday, and might call in to Lakeland. How do you rate this stuff against Klear?

What are the main differences.

The Fin looks great btw.

Hi MG - for my money I think it gives you a glossy finish in fewer coats, and it seems to dry with a crisper sharper finish than Klear. Its a bigger bottle and cost more, but I think we worked out that price per millilitre is about the same. You can dip canopies in it too just llke klear etc etc. I'd say that if you are nearly out of klear, or your bottle is getting old and a bit gloopy, then its worth a try.

Cheers - have fun in the lake district.

Top dog danglies Jonners! looking sweee-eeet!!

Just noticed theo, but does the nose gear look like it suffers the same extended oleo as the Ital kit?...To my ttired ol' eye's it does.

Hiya merv - you know what I was wondering about that. Sitting flat the model has a VERY VERY slight nose up pitch - but I mean VERY. The oleo is quite extended on the model part. I'll take some side on pics in the morning, with some kind of datum line, and you can see what you think. Its not too late to change this bit - and if its another tweek that helps other builders I'll happily do it.

PS - will try and send "the package" on Monday via TNT

I think I may reduce the oleo on mine - when I get around to it, I think all Tornado kits seem to suffer from this...I know the 1/32nd RoG kit does.

The chubby wing glove box is very apparent Jonners...shame, I dunno what the answer is to that - I've tried to alter mine, but I don't think I've done that convincing a job of it!!

Hi Bill - yeah I know. I cant think of a fix thats easy to do - though yours does look like the way to go. The only alternative I can think of is is for Neil B to do a combined resin wing and glove box thats a drop in fix. But thats not going to be a cheap bit of resin.

Perversely after this one is done - if HB ever release a "GR4" version I might have another try, though the F3 does tempt too - didnt the Italians use them too for a while?

I'm actually looking forward to the F3!! Though the wing glove box will need some ultra-serious correction, being longer and pointier - maybe even easier to knock-up?

Italian F3's were delivered to them in standard RAF colours i.e Barley Grey and LACG. There was a colourful example on the Italeri decal sheet, I'd surprised if that didn't feature on the HB Mk3....

"Action this day" as a certain Marlboroughian figure once said. So the nose wheels have come of and the front oleo has been cut.

I'll decide how much to remove in the morrow.

Alea dacta est - no going back now - I think the sit of the model will look better as a result. Thanks to Merv (and Bill) for making me realise it needed to be done.

pics will be provided

This might help....

Nose down with the oleo compressed...

http://www.airliners.net/photo/Germany---A...-IDS/1352489/L/

or nose up with it more extended...

http://www.airliners.net/photo/Germany---A...S(T)/1359521/L/

http://www.airliners.net/photo/UK---Air/Pa...-GR1/1354060/L/

or just about level...

Oleo's compress depending on what weight is being carried and I would think the quantity of fuel in the tanks is what makes the big difference. There are tanks just above and behind the main gear (the pivot point), in the wings (again just above the main gear) and a large tank just behind the cockpit, some way forward from the pivot point. Couple that with the large heavy fin and I would think an almost empty jet, deprived of that forward weight will sit more nose high. Either way you won't be wrong although I do think nose down looks a bit sexier :)

Actually, just behind the nose gear bay is the ammo tank for the gun, which is removeable & a good place to hide the duty free!

I've notised that the German Tornado's seem to sit nose high, I think most kit makers maybe measuring these aircraft?. RAF jets do have a nose down sit.

The models looking good, but I'm still in no rush to start mine with all the work that you have done on yours!

Shaun.

This was looking mighty fine til the wheels went on. The nose gear looks to be too extended and the wheels inordinately large. <disclaimer>To my eye!</disclaimer>

I like Tornados. Looking at this job you've done so far helps me to understand (a bit!) those people who go apoplectic with rage when they see a new release which features unfortunate shape errors that mar the overall look.

The paintjob is outstanding though!
