Hi

i'm in need of a set of accurate drawings for the Harrier Gr5 and Gr7, which i'm struggling to find. i have got a set of outlines in 1:72 scale which were drawn by Mike Keep, but i have been unable to verify how accurate they are. ideally i need fuselage sections as well.

can anyone help me out or point me in the right direction?

many thanks,

matt

Very accurate if they are Mike Keep.

thanks Johnathan, certainly they match up well to the many photographs ive got detail-wise, but its the shape im most interested in at the mo.

interestingly the old airfix harrier GR7 matches up PERFECTLY with the mike keep drawings . . . but ive read comments that the shape of the old kit isnt quite right?

Airfix's Harrier GR5/7 is as accurate as any Harrier II in 1/72nd scale. It is an old kit - I'd guess a good 15 years old by now - if not 20! It has a few problems though..the fin is too thick, I think (been a long time since I made one)The LERX's are a bit too big for 65% and a bit too small for 100% LERX's and are slightly mis shaped. The canopy framing is overdone, and the stores - on the original kit - woeful! The Drop tanks and Aden pods being terrible!! There's a bit of a step at the rear of the wing to fuselage join that shouldn't be there.

BUT it does have the correct lumps and bumps where it should have them!

And as Jonathan say's - you can trust Mike Keep's drawings!!

Hi Matt,

I can help you with those, drop me a PM with your home e-mail address.

Thanks for the link Tony T. I've just looked at those Russian ones... mmm... they have curate's egg written if not drawn all over them - good in parts and lousy in others.

Mike's drawings were usually pretty good, as were AAP LLoyd's. For example, both their SHAR drawings have some inaccuracies in them, Mike's being the best for outline, AAP's best for some details; IMHO. The subject of accuracy of scale drawings can be a messy one as John Adams can often relate...

My rule of thumb, compare drawing's detail and outline accuracy with the best photos one can lay one's hands on and then make one's own mind up using one's own eyes and gut feeling. If in doubt check and do some test measurements using dividers and what one can ascertain to be key known dimensions of the real thing.

Hope that helps,

Nick
