1/48 Tornado GR4

After not getting much done over Christmas etc, I've getting back into it again.

Pre-shaded the kit, although I never really have much luck with this and end up losing it all in a haze of paint!

Got the main colours on too, Xtracrylix, DSG and DCG, tried using Xtracrylix RLM24 lightened with some white for the fin but the airbrush didn't seem to like it so I used Tamiya Flat Blue mixed with a little white. As usual the pre-shadings all but disappeared! Studied some photo's of ZG756 and noticed there's some MSG panels too so have added some of these also. Next up the Alclad burner cans etc.

Another update, I've given the kit a dark wash, added some decals and applied the Alclad to the burner cans etc, tried the Alclad hot metal colours for the first time and I'm really impressed, I'm not greatly skilled with an airbrush and it came out really well.

I've had a small problem with my decals from Aviation Workshop, I gave them a phone last Thursday at 10am and spoke with a chap called Andrew Warne, he spoke with AW Boss Man and sorted out a new set which were posted out the same day, hats of to Aviation Workshop for some quality customer care. :thumbsup2:

This is a good thread for refs on how to do the Italeri Tornado using the flightpath AM stuff. Thanx again Muzz for all your help and aid with flightpath pix. Now to have the Minister of Finance allocate funds for the purchase of the upgrade :o:S .

Gday Muzz, looking good. I see you paint with xtracolour which is what I use. If you preshade using a matt colour, you will always lose it, try preshading with gloss black, sorry if you are already doing this, cant tell from the pics, alternatively , paint the a/c in the greys, THEN preshade, finally add a thinned final coat of the camouflage colour. Doing it this way you will discover you need a lot less paint to cover the preshading (as your model is already in the camouflage colours) and will not lose them, and you have far more control over the final subtlety of your preshading> Hope this helps and I have explained it clearly

Regards

Bruce

Thanks for the comments guys, Bruce you do make sense and I might give that a try if I'm feeling confident! I've been preshading with matt black so I'll try the gloss too, thanks.

Just another wee update for you, plugging my way through the decals but getting there, not started on the undercarriage yet. Had a fight with the white decals on the tail but there on and looking not too bad at all.

Nice progress, Muzz! This build is really good for seeking inspiration to a future build! However, I would like to insist, if I may.

Is there any noticeable difference between the Italeri and Paragon fins? I ain't quite able to tell whut the difference is, really. Would you mind putting the Italeri fin together side by side with the Paragon one? Whut is the difference between one and the other?

Cheers, Muzz, my mate!

Nice work Muzz! :speak_cool:

Uncle Uncool - The Paragon part comes to a sharper tapered point along it's leading edge, the kit part is too bulged. At least so far as I can recall.

Hi Muzz,

Looks really neat, and I love the colour scheme. A slight concern might be that the yellow pieces on the decals are too thin? You can see white through them.

Just a small thing really, the build looks great :speak_cool:

Cheers

James

Aw, many thanks for the clarification, Col.(onel?), mate. salute.gif <-------------- brought that one just for ya. :bleh:

Me is able to see the difference between the parts now; guess I was just too fixated on the airscoops, which look just about the same, don't they?

Thanks, mate!

No problem mate, glad to help. As for the name, it's a long story and joke amongst some friends but no need to salute it

Thanks for all the comments folks.

James, I've had problems with the decals being too thin, the white ones didn't hold up very well to the blue backround, I knew others had the same problem so I gave MA a phone and they were kind enough to send me another set, no questions asked, great customer service! I've had to double up all the decals to solve the problem the crest you can see with the yellow bits is just a single decal at the moment still to put the second on top which solves the problem. My only problem was I made a big mess of the first white diamond stripe I put on the port side and it broke up making it unusable so theres only a single decal on that side.

Uncle Uncool, Col's quite correct and heres the photo you were looking for to prove it.............

Aw, noooooiseee... Murray :worthy: Thank ya for the picture, and I apologise for the nagging, mate. I thought that perhaps the bulging on the Italeri fin's leading edge would be easy to correct, but judging from this picture, I see it's not.

As for yer decal problem, one thing I use to do in these odd circumstances is to make a template of the decal prior its placement and paint the area under the spot where the decal is going to be, using that template as though it were a stencil. For instance, in the case of the decal on the tail of yer model; I would have copied the contour of the badge as close as I could on a piece of paper, and then trimmed it with a scalpel blade until it came completely off the paper; hence, what ya'd be left with were a stencil. Placing that stencil where the badge should be on the tail, I'd have sprayed white and then placed the decal over it.

I take it that sometimes there is no way to know whether or not we are going to be able to see through the decals before placement, but then again, there are certain colours in decals that are likely to behave in that way, all the more so when it's a lighter decal colour against a darker paint scheme or a darker decal colour against a white paint scheme.

Hope ya get the meaning, my mate. Sorry about my mistake English.

Cheers
