Eduard's Lightning

nopey no! :(

would like the Mk1/2 to go with the Airfix Mk6 i have.

But don't see how i can justify spending half a ton on plastic to sit in the stash.

still don't think the extras that Eduard have supplied are all that great but that is a personal opinion. Think i would prefer to spend the extra dosh on resin/white metal

good luck to anyone bagging one though- not envious, no not an iota!

honest :fraidnot:

I was adding up the cost of a "decent" 1/72 F.1a the other day and it's not too far off Eduard's price unforetunatley;

£21 for the base kit (That has many errors),

£9 for Aires corrected exhausts which to me is a must,

~£7 for Xtradecals (Firebirds display scheme),

£3.50 for Quickboost air intake,

(adding a resin cockpit would knock it £50+)

This all adds up to ~ £46. Hannants lists the eduard kit at £56 which isn't that reasonable but it highlights what a complete joke trumpeter have got going with their, 1/72, kit! Its simply taking the p**s.

If you really want a shock though, check out trumpeter's new Su-24 price....

Isn't Academy tooling up a 1/72 Frightning?

I'm totally, totally fed up with this total lack of anything half decent in 1/72nd scale. Trumpeter have well and truly screwed this pooch! It looks like a Lightning? Well yah-boo!! Airfix's 50 year old kit looks like a Lightning! Thats as far as we've got in half a century! A kit that LOOKS like a Lightning!

What a load of bollo!

Whilst waiting for Airfix to re-invent the 1/72nd Lightning, and why not? They've done it to the Spitfire IX and the Hawk - if you're looking for a decent early Lightning then get hold of an old Airfix F1a (or F3) and get the correction sets mentioned - plus an undercarriage set from Aeroclub.

For the F6 or F2a get a hold of a Matchbox kit for a fiver.........no worse than that Trumpeter thing!! And wait and see what Academy or MPM bring out in the meantime!!!

Incorrect coloured cockpit and average content of resin (the radar glare sheild was rarely unfolded on the ground, btw), plus some inaccuracies on the decal sheet.....so no, I cancelled my pre-order.

That is all.

I believe so, though I'm not sure how far they are through the design stage. Hopefully they will have a proper go at it.

That is a way to go but I reckon I'll wait to see what academy brings. If it is anything like their new F-16/18 series we are in for a treat!

I'm with you on the lack of decent 1/72nd Lightnings Bill - a fellow club member & I got blue in the face berating Trevor Snowden every year at the Nats to get Airfix to downscale their 48ths - they'd done all the hard work for goodness sake!! He did throw us a crumb of comfort the year the 1/72 TSR2 was announced by saying if it was succesful (which it surely was?), they'd be tooling up the other aircraft shown on the box art - yup the Lightning tub. Well, we're still waiting......

However I don't agree with "A kit that LOOKS like a Lightning!" when its applied to that Trumpeter 72nd scale abortion. To me, it doesn't even look like a Lightning - there's something strange about it aside from the well-published faults that to my eye at least throws the look out completely. I can't put my finger on it, but it just doesn't look right....

Hey now, mister man.... You can't just go bashing Trumpeter willy-nilly like that! It's simply not allowed. We're all supposed to bow down and genuflect before the Trumpeter altar, and kiss their rings and thank them profusely for showering us with new kits of things that haven't been done before - even if they're utter crap most of the time. No you straighten up young man!

Its the same as their 1/32nd scale kit - the nose ring is too deep - to compensate for the fuselage length being too short. This in turn makes the wings too far forward. the belly tank (on the F2a/F6) is far too deep. therefore the undercarriage is too long to compensate. The other two kits share this elongated undercarriage - making them wrong as well. The tail pipe issue is well known.

The spine is too big, the canopy too bulbous. The canopy sill is a bit too low. The main wheel doors are the wrong shape and because of the elongated nature of the legs there is no space to fit the standard 36" roundel underneath - hence the smaller offering in the kit. Surface detail is a bit suspect in parts. Aden cannon bulges are too big, No detail in the cannon trouighs - which are too low on the nose. Fin on F2a/F6 is too small - though not sure by how much in 1/72.

And the wings!! Not bad in outline, but missing the kinked leading edge and "undercamber" on the F2a/F6, and the undercarriage bays are too shalllow....

Everything is slightly out of shape, combine all of these and their knock-on effect and you get the cock-up that is Trumpeter's Lightning!

Red tops and Firestreaks are nice though! £20.00 for a pair of Red Tops and Firestreaks!!!!

I'm hoping it is of a similar quality to their wonderful F-8 Crusader. Hopefully, Academy will also do earlier versions. It would be a crying shame to have a wonderful Academy F6 and be doomed to use the Trumpeter kit for earlier versions.

I also think the anhedral is wrong - & I always thought that was what was throwing the 'look' out the most. But when you list ALL the faults like that Bill, then I can see why I really don't like looking at the thing!!

Oh, and J, please pass my humblest apologies to Trumpeter for daring to criticise one of their utterly, superb, can do no wrong, wonders of miniscule plastic engineering. I shall try my utmost to remember my place in future.....!!:P

Totally agree! It puzzles me how on earth they managed to screw it up with so much data avaliable, anyways this isn't a trump bash thread so I'll pipe down

Yes - and the Trumpy wing sits too high in the fuselage - no doubt due to the over high undercarriage - that said the Airfix 1/48th kit suffers from anhedral problems - unless you add a wedge of plastic card and bend the things into shape!

Never noticed it on the Airfix kit. Bet I will now though....!!!:D

Oh Eduard!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE quit making that colored photo etch!! The colors never seem accurate and making things worse, it is nearly impossible to color match for touch ups. I don't mind the black instrument panels but the side consoles with 2 dimensional switches just don't work in 1/48!

Thanks for listening :)

Especially as the etch is totally the wrong colour for the earlier marks, which should be black.
