That is extremly dangerous to the aeroplane. How about this, the fuel bill for one of these is scary:

Yup intentional, it has been corrosion inhibited and it's just burning it off on start up. most times you just get lots of smoke but other times it burns off..... night makes it look more impressive.

Back in the 80s we used to see a fair few F-111s coming into Filton where they were serviced in the UK, one evening I heard one flying overhead then a popping sound, then a bang, a big roar - everyone thought it had exploded mid air, but instead there was the sight of an F-111 in a shallow climb on full reheat.

Engine restart? The USAF would never say!

Pic above........It was to decoy heat seeking missiles, the F111 fuel dump is between the engines, so fuel is jettisoned and then lit by selecting reheat, resulting in a huge flame and heat source behind the jet.

"I heard one flying overhead then a popping sound, then a bang, a big roar " sounds like a POP SURGE, this is when the engine reheat senses incorrect jet pipe pressure, chops the fuel, it flames out, then senses the pressure drop and bangs loads of fuel in to correct it all at once and you get an explosion in the jetpipe and a fireball out of the bottom end the popping is the surging, bang is relighting and roar is afterwards, normally low speed and high angle of dangle is when it happens.

It aint good, especially STANDING NEXT TO THE JETPIPE WHEN IT HAPPENS, I nearly poo'd myself

I worked on the F111's when I was in the RAAf at Amberley. The dump and burn was a regular occurence while I was there, very spectacular sight especially when they performed it at very low altitude. Also seeing an F111 taking off at night in full afterburner, not just the sight but the sound as well, very very nice.

Great vid, cheers

Seeing flames spewing out of a plane like that reminded me of the fate of most of my old models when I was a kid.....those was der days.

Cheers

I remember my Dad spending hours building me a Jetex Swift. looked beautiful, covered in silver dope. Problem was he forgot to fireproof it, and not only did it go Whoose, it when crackle crackle as it bust in to flames mid flight. At the time I'm sure I didn't see the funny side of it, like I do now!!! :yikes:

excellent, i love wet starts! reminds me of the time i was the outside man during a wet start on a Navy Merlin. we had burning fuel pouring out of the number 3 exhaust and down the fuselage for a good 10 seconds! the crew werent concerned though and there were no fire warning captions so i just stood back and enjoyed the show!
