TA-7C Corsair

New Hobby Boss 72nd kit in progress. Two days work so far. Had to make the tail chute fairing from scratch, otherwise SFTB. Looks like a family model SLUF to me! Gene, you may be interested to know that the TA-7's windscreen fits absolutely perfectly to the Fujimi fuselage. . . is the plot thickening?

Nice work Drewe, how'd you get this kit so quickly as i've been waiting for it for a while! So the kit doesn't come with a parachute fairing, thats a pain in the bottom.

Rainbow-10

I ordered from RB10 about the same time as Drewe......and missed out. They are out of stock, and according to them, unable to get more from their supplier. Damn!!!! In that regard, NO ONE "over there" has it - or the A-7A anymore for that matter (got mine from HLJ). Further, those shops that take preorders have stopped. Makes one wonder where all those kits went?

Drewe,

Looks great so far (you're probably finished by now). Can't believe HB didn't include the chute fairing!!! What about the tailcone blanking?

Preliminary painting done. All Gunze Mr Color laquers, blu-tak masking. Lots of touch ups tomorrow and detail painting prior to glossing but it's getting there. Gene, no blanking plate either.

Wow looks great Drewe.

Yeah Drewe, what he said.

Your paintwork looks excellent. I hope all goes smoothly for your final stages, which are probably happening as I (mis)type.

Cheers,

Andrew

Decals! The gloss coat is Tamiya clear, decals are Icarus printed by Cartograph, so due to their multiple layers of varnish and poor general performance of Cartograph in my experience I used Jens Brandall's method of application, utilising Tamiya acrylic thinner as the softening agent to melt both the gloss coat and decal varnish and "fuse" them together, making them stick like s**t to a blanket, suck into detail well and also eliminating silvering. Coming along!

Wezra, my Gunze pusher is Rainbow-10.

The Corsair is looking really great, Drewe - even with a camo scheme.

Could you elaborate on Jen's method (or give me a pointer to the discussion) - use the thinner like a setting solution, under and over the decal?

I can't really take credit for the idea of using Tamiya Acrylic thinner as a softening agent for decals - I think it was Rocardo Dacoba who had an article in FineScale Modeler and mentioned using it for a Belgian Tiger Meet F-16. Come to think of it, the thinner smells a bit like Micro Sol... Anyway, if you apply an acrylic clear coat (Johnson's Klear/Future) or Polly S, and then apply some Tamiya Acrylic thinner to the surface where you want the decal, then the thinner will slightly dissolve the acrylic gloss and make it milky. Apply the decal and then use the brush to press it down. The thinner will dry, making the surface clear again and the slightly dissolved varnish will contribute to eliminate silvering. The thinner will also work as a solvent for the decal film and make it snuggle into every detail. A word of warning though - don't soak the surface in thinner too long as it will craze the clear coat, and thinner decals will start going gooey if applied into a pool of thinner. In those cases, it is better to apply the decal to the surface and then apply the thinner. I described the method in the June 2006 issue of Model Aircraft Monthly while building a Norwegian Mosquito.

Nice looking Corsair Drewe - like the subtle fading of the paint and the tight camo edges look just right in 1:72.

So the kit 'owes something' to the Fujimi one does it? I take it this is one of their 'full kits' rather than a 'kwik-bild' ©

A word of warning though - don't soak the surface in thinner too long as it will craze the clear coat, and thinner

Equally don't use it on an un-varnished acrylic paint job, especially one where the demarcation line goes under the decal!!

Decals on, wash applied where decals cross panel lines. Couple sealing coats of Tamiya clear with a couple drops of light grey in it to remove the starkness from the markings and blend them into the finish better. Matt finish is Revell matt varnish (enamel), Stores and pylons added, masking removed. Seats and details to go and then she'll be done.

Really nice Drewe! And a LOT less arseing about than using the Maintrack (remember them) conversion I did years ago with a Fujimi A-7. Ooo the trauma in attacking the fuselage in two places with a razor saw...... :suicide:
